Objectives of this section

To provide though-provoking pictures of dryland rivers, their sediments and settings, and related matters. I hope these will aid understanding of dryland rivers, help with teaching the subject, and stimulate new ideas, projects and collaboration. These are in addition to the images contained on other pages or accessed through the links on the "Useful stuff" page. This section provides images directly. You can find further images by following the links from the Useful Stuff part of the site.

I am most grateful to Geoff Pickup for putting in the time and effort to kick off this aspect of the website by supplying a fascinating set of images and accompanying explanation. So, you out there, how about following Geoff's model and contributing or suggesting sources of images? I'll help you set it up.

Please bear in mind the little matter of copyright of the images - I must have permission to use the images for non-profit purposes. Copyright will always be acknowledged on this website (it belongs to Colin P. North unless stated otherwise!).

Geoff Pickup's Dryland River Gallery

Geoff Pickup has kindly set up a most stimulating gallery of images of Australian drylands and their rivers, accumulated during many years specialising in river sedimentation issues, desertification and international environment policy. Images illustrate a range of different topics, including the extreme opposite, rivers with extreme sediment loads in some of the wettest parts of the World.

The Geo-Images Project
University of California at Berkeley

The Geo-Images project was conceived as a way of making images (mostly photographs) that are useful in teaching geography more widely available. It was conceived, constructed, and is maintained by G. Donald Bain, in the Geography Computing Facility, University of California at Berkeley. Several useful drylands photos here, though covers more than drylands. Still growing.
