The lower Finke Gorge is very different to the deeply
trenched upper Finke and Ellery Gorges. Here, it cuts through thinly
bedded and gently dipping sedimentary rocks, creating a wide valley.
The riverbed is about 300 m wide and is flanked by alluvial fan,
floodplain and aeolian deposits. The lines of trees in the
channel (centre right) indicate linear bars.
