Finke River Gorge palaeomeander system incised into bedrock.

Hillshaded digital elevation model of the upper Finke River Gorge derived from TOPSAR interferometric radar.  Image is about 15 x 20 km and shows the Finke River flowing from top to bottom with Ellery Creek entering from the lower right.  The Finke Gorge has two incised and interlocking meander trains, as does the lower Ellery.  The secondary meander train has a higher bed than the currently active gorge and slopes more steeply downstream.  It contains heavily cemented fossil bed material.  The twin incised meander trains are unusual if not unique and their origin  remains a matter of speculation.  DEM data supplied by Melba Crawford, Univ. of Texas.
