Maps / GIS

Map data in the UK is mainly provided by the Ordnance Survey, with marine (hydrographic) map data being provided by the Hydrographic office - however, there are also other suppliers in the UK, including Bartholomews.

Map data is generally becoming more affordable, and many maps are now available on the Internet. Other data derived from map products is also available, such as GIS data available from English Nature. However, map data required for ICZM is still relatively difficult to find and obtain due to how it is collected, stored, maintained, and conditions governing its use. English Nature / Scottish Natural Heritage recently released GIS data for the Solway Firth European Marine Site on CD. Some of this data has been incorporated into the Solway Coastal Information System. This is served over the Internet using ESRI's ArcIMS.

The Map / GIS Tool from the Solway Firth GDSPDS

The Solway map data is served using ArcIMS. This offers a simplified and customised interface, available over the Internet, where the map layers can be switched on and off, the map can be panned, and the user can zoom in and out. Hotlinks to other data or websites can also be incorporated into the map. As in ArcView, the information tool can be used to call up data about the map layers, this is shown in the centre-bottom panel.

The Map services available on the site are:

  • Habitat & Nature Conservation: shows the main conservation designations for the Solway Firth as well as marine and terrestrial habitats
  • Coastal Defence & Protection: shows the location and type of sea defence and protection schemes for the Solway Firth
  • Leisure, Recreation & Tourism: shows the location of bathing beaches, marines, access points, car parks and footpaths for the Solway Firth
  • Settlement, Transport & Industry: shows major areas of settlement, transport networks and industry for the Solway Firth

Archaeology, Built & Natural Landscape: shows features of archaeological, built and natural landscape importance (under development)
  • Political & Administrative: shows the major political and administrative boundaries around the Solway (under development)
  • Image Catalogue: shows the type and coverage of remotely sensed imagery available on the GDSPDS
  • Silloth: shows GPS data collected for the Silloth area. Also includes aerial photography and hyperlinks to photography, panoramic photography and video
  • Kippford: shows GPS data collected for Kippford area. Also includes aerial photography and hyperlinks to photography and video
  • Raster maps: taken from the Solway Firth Review, 1996
