Landcover Map of Great Britain

The Land Cover Map of Great Britain was derived from 1989 / 1990 satellite images of the UK.

The map provides:

the first complete map of the land cover of Great Britain since the 1960s
the first time the land cover of Great Britain has been comprehensively mapped from satellite information
the first digital map of national land cover accuracy to the field scale, checked against ground survey

The map can be used to plan, manage and monitor:

agriculture, ecology, conservation, forestry, environmental assessment, water supplies, urban spread, transport, telecommunications, recreation and mineral extraction - all of which are components of Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM)

The map below shows an excerpt from the Land Cover Map for the Solway Firth area. The National Grid co-ordinates for the scene are:

South West NX6020
North East NY4080

The map is a 50 metre resolution plot showing all 25 classes of land cover (click on image to view larger map and Land Cover Key for more information)

Datasets from 25m resolution upwards are available under licence from CEH Monks Wood (formerly ITE Monks Wood)
