The
Land Cover Map of Great Britain was derived from 1989 /
1990 satellite images of the UK.
The
map provides:
the
first complete map of the land cover of Great Britain since
the 1960s
the first time the land cover of Great Britain has been
comprehensively mapped from satellite information
the first digital map of national land cover accuracy to
the field scale, checked against ground survey
The
map can be used to plan, manage and monitor:
agriculture,
ecology, conservation, forestry, environmental assessment,
water supplies, urban spread, transport, telecommunications,
recreation and mineral extraction - all of which are components
of Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM)
The
map below shows an excerpt from the Land Cover Map for the
Solway Firth area. The National Grid co-ordinates for the
scene are:

North East NY4080

The
map is a 50 metre resolution plot showing all 25 classes
of land cover (click on image to view larger map and
Land Cover Key for more information)
Datasets
from 25m resolution upwards are available under licence
from CEH Monks Wood (formerly ITE Monks Wood)
