GPS and Mobile

Other data that can be incorporated into a GIS is GPS (Global Positioning System) data collected in the field. A GPS can be used to collect location data about particular features (e.g. road junctions or sea defences) that can then have attribute data (descriptive data) attached to them. GPS data were collected for the study areas in 2000 and 2001 using a Garmin eMap GPS (2000) and Omnistar DGPS (2001). They were attached to a Comapq Aero 2160 running both ESRI's ArcPAD 5.0.1 and 6.0 (Beta) software as well as Pocket GIS provided by Positioning Resources. The Husky FEX21 hand held computer was also used.

Mobile Computing

The mobile computers used during the data capture process were all powered by versions of Windows CE and Pocket PC from Microsoft. The latest version of this software is PocketPC 2002. Screen shots are shown below:

Using the Compaq Aero 2160 with Garmin's eMap GPS receiver The GPS is connected to the palm top PC using a null modem lead
The Compaq Aero 2160 has:

256 colours high resolution TFT display (upgradeable to 64K)
70 MHz MIPS-based RISC CPU
24 MB Memory RAM
Serial Port (115 KB per second)
Standard Type II CompactFlash Card Slot
Infrared Port (IrDA standard, 115KB per second)

Specifiactions for running ArcPad:
The following CPU chips - Hitachi SH3 and SH4, StrongARM, MIPS
Windows CE 2.11 with Microsoft ActiveSync 3.0 (will also run on Windows 95/98, NT and 2000)
4 MB memory, 75 MHz monochrome display palm-sized PC Windows CE
Typical system: 24 MB memory, 133 MHz processor, colour display and memory card for extra map data

Specifications for running PocketGIS
Microsoft Windows CE version 2.0 or later
Between 500k and 1Mb of stiorage memory to install
1.5Mb to 2Mb of system memory to run PocketGIS
4Mb plus of RAM + storage memory for data
