Welcome!
All forestry graduates from
Aberdeen University automatically
become members of the Aberdeen Forestry Alumni Society. It is an opportunity
to keep in contact with friends, arrange reunions, and find out what
is going on the world of forestry. This year, we celebrate the Centenary
of Forestry at the University of Aberdeen.
Forestry Society Annual
Dinner 2009
The 2009 Annual Dinner of Aberdeen University
Forestry Society was held on Friday 25 February at the Copthorne Hotel,
Huntly
Street, Aberdeen.
The guest speaker was Dr James Pendlebury, Chief Executive, Forest
Research , who presented his vision of the future of research into forestry
and related areas. The raffle was a great success and raised nearly
£300, which will be used to support student field trips. Thanks to all
graduates and companies who contributed a raffle gift.
Support
the dinner
It is important to keep the tradition going so come
along and meet ‘old’ classmates. Why not make it into a class reunion.
The Alumni Relations office can help you contact your colleagues (alumni@abdn.ac.uk). Alternatively, contact
the honorary secretary of the Forestry Society, Dr Andrew Cameron, who
will point you in the right direction (a.d.cameron@abdn.ac.uk).
Sponsoring
Tables
Individuals and companies are welcome to sponsor tables
at the Annual Dinner. Given the popularity of table sponsorship, some
changes to the process have taken place. Sponsoring organisations will
now be able to invite up to three non-Aberdeen graduate guests
on each sponsored table seating usually 8 people. Please contact Andrew
Cameron (e-mail a.d.cameron@abdn.ac.uk ; telephone
01224 272673) for more details.

The first Forestry Society Annual Dinner was held in 1946 and
has become an established part of the Alumni and Student Societies’
calendars attracting 60-70 graduates and undergraduates every
year in late February. We invite a senior figure from the forestry
profession as guest speaker. On the lighter side, there is a raffle
where the proceeds go to assist student activities. It is a wonderful
opportunity to meet classmates, fellow graduates and undergraduates.

The Annual Borthwick-Steven Lecture
The 2009 Annual Borthwick-Steven
Lecture was held on the afternoon of the Annual Dinner. The lecture
was delivered by Professor Dougals Godbold, Bangor University on his
research on climate change.
The 2010 lecture will be given by Dr Hugh
Evans, Head of Forest Research, Wales on the afternoon of the Annual
Dinner. The title of the lecture is Global threats to forests from
international movement of forest pests.
|
The Borthwick-Steven Lecture is named
after two of the most prominent Chairs of Forestry at the University
of Aberdeen. Professor Albert W. Borthwick
was the first Chair of Forestry from 1926 to 1937 and Professor
Henry M. Steven held the Chair from 1938 to 1962. Professor Steven
is perhaps best known for his commitment to the future of the
native pine forests of Scotland and for the definitive text on
the subject; ‘The Native Pinewoods of Scotland,’ H.M. Steven and
A. Carlisle, Oliver & Boyd, Edinburgh, 1959.

ARBOR magazine
Arbor
Magazine first appeared in 1946 and included articles by students and

Aberdeen
University Forestry Society
Aberdeen University Forestry Society was founded in 1919. The
first president was Ernest V. Laing who went on to become a member
of staff. The students still involve themselves in a variety of
sporting and social activities, including the Annual Dinner which
is the high point of the Society calendar.
