I am a Senior Systems Support Operator for DIT and a part of the Data Centre and Operations Group. Computer Operators look after the running of server rooms, ensuring that the machines are running and physically secured. Traditionally operators used to work with mainframes which required a great deal of day-to-day management. However modern technology is making the more traditional roles obsolete and as such most of the duties we undertake are now that of a low level System Administrator. We look after: backups and restores, day-to-day management of the computing classrooms for students, general management of the printing system (for staff and students), updating and creating staff accounts, SCEF processing, monitoring the Data Centre's and servers within them.
Some of the tasks we handle require interaction with staff and students and as such I have written a few pieces of documentation to assist.
