CS4016: SunStart ProgramGeneralSunStart is an industrial placement scheme run by Sun Microsystems, and supported by Scottish Enterprise. Students accepted on this programme work for Sun for a year, usually in the USA. It appears that SunStart are no longer offering the substantial numbers of placements they did before 2007. What follows below describes the situation before 2007. Aberdeen students who have returned from SunStart have described it as a wonderful experience. On a personal level, its a chance to live in and explore the USA for a year, on a salary comparable to what many graduates get; plus in many cases students come back with much more self-confidence, after seeing how much they can contribute to a company like Sun. And on an intellectual level, its a chance to "learn by doing" at one of the leading IT companies around; I suspect most of our returned students think they learned more in their SunStart year than in their three previous years at university. Although joint honours CS/Maths students cannot normally do placements, we will try to make special arrangements for such students if they are interested and if Sun wants them.
