Last Sunday, the Dundee International Sports Complex played host to the first round of the inaugural Ultimate League, with teams from Dundee, Edinburgh, Glasgow, St. Andrews and Stirling competing. Our own Ultimate club, Positive Mojo entered two teams, and the twelve teams were split into two groups. Both Aberdeen clubs got off to good starts in the league stage of the competition: the As steamrollered Dundee's third team 12-1 before pumelling St. Andrews' B team 11-3. The B team started strongly as well; Stirling (who only entered one team) were brushed aside 13-5, before a hard-fought 7-6 victory over Edinburgh B. Unfortunately, both teams suffered setbacks; the first team were defeated 9-6 by the top-seeded Edinburgh firsts, while the second team were outgunned 9-3 by the Glasgow A team. The Aberdeen A team fought back with victories over Glasgow B and Dundee A, although the defeat to Edinburgh would cost them top spot in the group, and a place in the final. However, things didn't go as smoothly for the B team; although they beat Dundee B 11-3, they were edged out 8-6 by St. Andrews A, and had to settle for third in the group. First up in the knockout stage was Aberdeen B, facing Dundee's A team. They started badly though, and despite a good recovery, went down 11-9. This left them sixth in the final standings, and the highest placed B team in the tournament. Next on court was the A team, facing team A from St. Andrews. With some impressive play, they moved 5-0 up and didn't look back. The game ended 13-7 in Aberdeen's favour, with the A team ranked third, above their seeding of fifth. In the final, an impressive and efficient Glasgow A side dismissed an exhausted Edinburgh A, who hadn't brought any subs. So round one over, and Glasgow installed as current holders. There are planned rounds in Glasgow, St Andrews and Edinburgh (sometime soon...) so things can only improve. But we didn't leave empty-handed; Aberdeen B were awarded the Spirit award, and a biiig bottle of vodka... Jonny Hughes Results
