Published Descriptions & Nomenclature.

The International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature maintains an Official List of Generic Names in Zoology, as well as a List of Specific Names. If we write about a genus, this too can be accompanied by a citation: 'the genus Pipistrellus Kaup, 1829', for example.

Changes to specific and generic names are proposed by publication. For a species, an identifiable specimen in a known collection is designated the type specimen; for a genus a type species is given, with authority and date.
