Aberdeen Harbour Shear Poles

Shear legs were used to raise large masses before the advent of modern cranes. This photograph shows a 75 ton load test on 3 September 1910 on the 100 ton shear legs at the North Lock, Aberdeen Harbour. The apparatus used to raise the sei whale would have been essentially similar.
