Conditions of use
- You must have a valid university username and password.
- When using the wireless networks, you are bound by the University's Conditions for using IT facilities [PDF].
- When using ResNet, you are bound by additional Guidelines for Using ResNet [web page].
- You must ensure that you have up to date anti-virus software (e.g. Sophos) correctly installed and running on your computer.
While you are a student at the University of Aberdeen, we recommend that you use Sophos anti-virus software for which we have a site licence. For full details, including guidance on installation, see our dedicated Sophos web pages.
If your computer does not have up to date virus checking, or is infected with a virus, DIT will take the following action:
- Access to ResNet and eduroam will be immediately suspended. You will still be able to log on to classroom or public access PCs to check your e-mail and use the centrally provided software for your studies.
- You will be notified by e-mail that your access to ResNet and eduroam has been suspended and advised that you should bring your computer to the Service Desk within two working days for the virus to be removed and your machine certified as virus free.
- If you fail to bring your computer to the Service Desk within the allotted time frame, all access to IT facilities will be suspended until you do so.
- You are also advised to bring in any USB memory sticks or other external devices that you have connected to the infected computer in case they are also infected. If other people have connected their own devices to your computer, please advise them to check these as well.
See our Policy for dealing with Virus-infected Personal Computers (Students) for further guidelines - www.abdn.ac.uk/dit/documents/virus-student-pcs.pdf.
- Specifically, the wireless network should not be used for anything that:-
- is illegal
- is commercial
- poses a security risk
- could cause a denial of service
- Please remember that the wireless network is shared and is therefore not intended for use by high bandwidth applications such as streaming audio/video, large file transfers/downloads, interactive graphic environments/games, etc. Such usage may impede the quality and speed of service for others.
