LTU WebCT Information SheetDownloading and Using an Archiving Tool

Why do you need an archiving tool?

WebCT only allows you to upload one file at a time. Therefore it is convenient, if you need to upload several files, to first bring them together into one 'zip' file. (After uploading, you would use the button provided within WebCT to simply 'unzip' this file into its original component files.)

Downloading an archiving tool

If you do not already have an archiving tool on your own computer, you can quickly download one from the Internet. There are several available, and WinZip is the most popular - a free evaluation copy is available to download at http://www.winzip.com/

After 30 days the evaluation licence expires and you will be required to delete the software or buy the full version. Alternatively, you could use PowerArchiver, which is similar but entirely free at http://www.powerarchiver.com/downloads.phtml.

Initial preparation

To save time later on, make the following preparations:

  1. In the main folder within which you are working, create a new sub-directory named zips. This is the directory to which you will save any archived files. (eg path and name of this new directory might be C:\webct\zips)
  2. Create a shortcut to WinZip on your desktop, if this has not already been done.

How to archive files
  1. Locate the files you wish to zip. If they are not already in a separate directory on their own, create a new sub-directory (eg: C:\webct\lectures) and place them in it. Note: Do not place the files or the new sub-directory in the zips folder.
  2. Drag the sub-directory of files for zipping to the WinZip shortcut on your desktop. The Add dialogue box will be displayed.
  3. In the Add to Archive textbox, type a location and name for the new file (eg: C:\webct\zips\archive1.zip)
  4. Click Add. The files you have selected for archiving will be listed.
  5. Close Winzip
  6. Open the zips folder, and check that it contains the .zip file you have just created.
