WHAT IS WEBCT AND HOW CAN IT BE USED?

WebCT (World Wide Web Course Tools) is an application that enables teaching staff to place course material and resources on the Web. It is best described as a set of individual tools, which can be used in a variety of combinations according to the requirements of the course. WebCT could be employed in any of the following ways:
  • To create a complete integrated course on the Web (eg distance learning course)
  • To facilitate a group project using the Bulletin Board and links to material
  • For online class discussion and tutorials
  • For assessment or self-test exercises using the Quiz tool
  • As a means of presenting multimedia materials, for example, music, poetry, video
  • As a gateway to a selection of external urls for research purposes
  • To facilitate online student presentations, whereby students create their own Web pages
  • To provide supplementary information or facilities (eg online course guide)
  • To place lecture notes online, and support them with the glossary and search tools

WHY WEBCT?

WebCT was chosen for use at the University of Aberdeen after a detailed review and consultation process. Some of the major advantages of WebCT over other similar products are:
  • it has a flexible, easy-to-use interface
  • it is extremely well-supported by its authors
  • it was the most reliable of the systems that we tested
  • it integrates well with our central UNIX-Apache Web server
  • it is already used by many other educational institutions
Also of interest is a brief report from the University of Georgia on their evaluation of WebCT, and the University of Coventry evaluation.

DEMONSTRATION SITES

  • Our WebCT Showcase has links to a selection of course WebCT sites developed at the University of Aberdeen.
  • TALiSMAN's Online Training site uses WebCT very effectively to deliver several on-line courses about Communications and the Web. Highly recommended as a demonstration of the capabilities of WebCT, and free to register.
