Rural Development and Research Organisations and Projects (in alphabetical order)

  • The Arkleton Trust
    The Arkleton Trust was founded in 1977 "to study new approaches to rural development and education" and "improve understanding between rural policy makers, academics, practitioners and rural people". The Trust organises seminars and workshops on matters of rural interest and concern, encourages exchange of experience, and has a series of publications.  It does not make awards or give grants, but it does administer three small funds.  (The Arkleton Centre  is a result of the merging in 1995 of Arkleton Trust (Research) Ltd with members of the University of Aberdeen.)

  • Caledonian Centre for Social Development - Land Programme
    Information, commentary and a forum for debate, with Scottish and international perspectives on land tenure, land reform, land use and social land ownership.

  • Canadian Rural Restructuring Foundation (CRRF)
    The activities of CRRF, based at Brandon University, Manitoba, are:

    - Bringing together people and institutions interested in improving and stabilizing the economic and social condition of rural people and places in 21st century Canada;
    - Funding 'think-tank' style workshops and seminars leading to an annual Conference, to speed the transformation of research into action and provide continuing education through an international exchange of views and experience;
    - Promoting and funding research which examines the development of options and strategies for economic sectors, private enterprise, and rural communities seeking to take advantage of global opportunities;
    - Funding the publication of research results addressing issues of rural restructuring to ensure continued learning and information dissemination to Canadians.

  • Centre for Human Ecology (CHE)
    The CHE, based in Edinburgh, is an independent academic network promoting quality teaching, research and outreach projects.  Fellows and Associates of the CHE work with individuals, communities and institutions to support practical, positive action towards sustainable development founded on ecological and social justice.

  • Centre for Rural Economy (CRE)
    This research centre is based at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in England.  The main focus is on sustainable development for rural areas, with current work falling into two strands: rural development and agri-environment.  The research is conducted at a local, regional, national and European level, and includes both traditional academic approaches and participative action research. 

  • Centre for Rural Social Research (CRSR)
    Based at Charles Sturt University in New South Wales, Australia, the CRSR is a national centre for rural social research and undertakes various research and consultancy projects on behalf of government agencies and community groups.   The Centre promotes the development of better provision of human services in rural Australia.

  • Centre for Social Science Research
    This designated research centre (formerly the RSERC) at Central Queensland University in Australia is a constituent centrewithin the Institute for Sustainable Regional Development (ISRD).  Its primary, but not exclusive, focus is in identifying and achieving sustainable social options for regional Australia.

  • Communities Scotland
    Government-funded national housing agency for Scotland, whose purpose is to provide good housing and contribute to the regeneration of local communities.

  • Council for the Protection of Rural England (CPRE)
    CPRE is a national charity working for a beautiful and living countryside on behalf of present and future generations, and for the more sustainable use of land and other resources in town and country.

  • The Countryside Agency
    The Countryside Agency, based at Cheltenham in Gloucestershire, is a statutory body (resulting from the merger of the Countryside Commission and the Rural Development Commission) working to conserve and enhance the English countryside, promote social equity and economic opportunity for the people who live there, and to help everyone enjoy this national asset.  They aim to lead with research and advice, to influence others especially central and local government, and to demonstrate ways forward through practical projects.

  • The Countryside and Community Research Unt (CCRU)
    CCRU, based at Cheltenham & Gloucester College of Higher Education, is one of the leading specialist rural research centres in the country, with current programmes of research on rural community development, rural poverty, agri-environment policies, local sustainability and rural recreation.

  • EADI (European Association of Development Research and Training Institutes)
    EADI's objectives are:
    -  To generate and stimulate exchange of information between European scientists and researchers concerned with development issues;
    -  To promote interdisciplinary studies on specific themes and encourage cooperation between researchers and institute members;
    -  To develop contacts with researchers from other regions of the  world.

    EADI produces a bi-annual Newsletter, an e-Newsletter and an Annual Report.

  • The European Policies Research Centre (EPRC)
    The EPRC is an independent research institute at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow.   They run two major research consortia in the field of regional policy research:  
    -  The Regional Policy Research Consortium sponsors ongoing research on regional incentive policy and is
    composed of senior national policymakers from most European Community countries.
    -  IQ-Net is a consortium of Objective 2 regions with an emphasis on the dissemination of best practice in the implementation of the Structural Funds.

    Together with Nordregio in Sweden, EPRC has recently launched SIRIUS, the School for International Regional Development.

  • Highland Research Network (HRN)
    The aim of the Highland Research Network is to encourage interdisciplinary discussion and exchange on topics relating to the Scottish Highlands and Islands.  The project aims to extend scholarly dialogues beyond the intellectual space of universities, through the active participation of exiles and residents of  Highland Scotland.

  • IMO (Institute for International Relations)
    Based in Zagreb, the IMO is a policy research organisation engaged in the interdisciplinary study of international economic and political relations, transitional policy, international markets, sustainable development, resource economics and environmental policy, foreign policy analysis, strategic decision analysis, and culture and communication.

  • The INCO Programme of the European Commission
    (Specific Research and Technological Development Programme in the Field of Cooperation with Third Countries and International Organisations). 
    New online brochure explaining the aims and activities of the INCO programme for International Cooperation in research.

  • The Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS)
    The IFS is an independent research organisation providing economic analysis of public policy.  Occasional documents are published online as Briefing Notes.
    For example, Briefing Note 10 (October 2000) "Vehicle Excise Duty discounts in rural areas" looks at possibility of cutting VED for people in rural areas.

  • The Institute for Sustainable Regional Development
    The ISRD at Central Queensland University, Australia, offers distinctive, holistic research approaches to regional issues,  focussing on the systematic and sustainable socio-economic development and resource management of regional Australia.

  • The Institute of Rural Health
    The Institute of Rural Health, based in mid Wales, is involved in research;   information gathering and dissemination;  the education and continuing professional development of rural doctors, dentists and other health care professionals;   the promotion, development and application of telecommunications and information technology to rural health care throughout the UK and Europe;  the establishment of partnerships with academic institutions, health authorities and corporate bodies; and networking of rural, and isolated, healthcare professionals.

  • International Society for Ecological Economics (ISEE)
    ISEE is a nonprofit organization that encourages the integration of economics and ecology into a transdiscipline aimed at developing a sustainable world.  Specific research areas include ecological modeling, ecological limits to growth, climate change, biodiversity, valuation of natural capital, and ecotax reform.  A cross-disciplinary approach is necessary because conflicting perspectives in economics and ecology have led to economic and environmental policies that are mutually destructive, rather than reinforcing and sustainable.  International secretariat is based in Maryland, USA, with European branch (ESEE) based in France at the Université de Versailles, Guyancourt.

  • International Rural Sociology Assocation (IRSA)
    Formed in 1976 from the Committee for International Cooperation in Rural Sociology, and coordinator of the World Congresses of Rural Sociology, the IRSA aims to generate dialogue and exchange fostering the development and application of rural sociology.

  • International Urban Development Association (INTA-AIVN)
    Representing the international community of public and private development organisations, INTA fosters initiatives in major urban programmes, regeneration schemes and development policies.  Based in Paris and The Hague, INTA-AIVN promotes the sharing of information and experience through a range of activities including conferences, study tours, the publication of documentation and advisory services on urban development issues. It assists its members in establishing useful relations with their professional counterparts throughout the world.

  • ITSCAND
    This project, launched in 1994, aims to encourage the beneficial application of Information and Communications technologies in peripheral areas of Scotland and Scandinavia.

  • The Joseph Rowntree Foundation
    The UK's largest independent social research and development charity supports a wide programme of research and development projects in the fields of housing, social care and disability, young people and families, and work, income and social policy. There are smaller programmes on local government and the voluntary sector.

  • LEADER II - The European Rural Development Network and the LEADER Observatory
    See Rural Europe, below.

  • LEADER+ - The follow-up programme to LEADER I and II, published in October 1999.   A new Community initiative for rural development, LEADER+ is one of the four Community initiatives implemented under the Structural Funds for the period 2000-2006.

  • Macaulay Land Use Research Institute (MLURI)
    Located in Aberdeen, the purpose of the Macaulay Institute is to develop systems of land use that will enable producers such as farmers and foresters to make a living from the land while at the same time enhancing their role as stewards and guardians of the countryside.

    Towards an Improved Rural Data Infrastructure for rural Scotland
    Joint project by the Macaulay Institute, BioSS, the Institute of Terrestrial Ecology and the Arkleton Centre.

  • The New Rural Economy (NRE).
    This five-year research and education program underway in rural Canada brings together policy-analysts, rural leaders, researchers, the business community, and government agencies at all levels to identify and address vital rural issues.

  • Nordic Centre for Spatial Development - Nordregio
    Based in Stockholm, Nordregio is a centre for research, education and documentation on spatial development, established by the Nordic Council of Ministers in July 1997.   Their website includes downloads of top-quality statistical maps in Nordic countries (please mention Nordregio if you use their maps).

  • Norwegian Institute for Urban and Regional Research (NIBR)
    National centre based in Oslo carrying out local and regional research, and also research into areas associated with the management of the environment and in the fields of the environment and development.

  • "Organic Farming in Europe:  Economics and Policy"
    Published by the University of Hohenheim / Department of Farm Management, this new series is born in a spirit of a Europe-wide co-operation between scientists to provide an unprecedented coverage of the development of organic farming in Europe and to present their results to an international audience.

  • REAPER
    Reaper is a European network of rural social science researchers and practitioners, working on a database of rural social science research in 16 participating countries.

  • Research Institute for Irish and Scottish Studies (RIISS)
    Based at the University of Aberdeen, RIISS is committed to initiating and supporting innovative research across the whole range of Irish and Scottish studies, with a special interest in comparative and interdisciplinary themes as well as in projects of a more traditional nature.

  • Royal Geographical Society with the Institute of British Geographers (RGS-IBG)
    The 'learned society representing Geography and Geographers'.  Aims to support research, education and training and the wider public understanding and enjoyment of Geography.

  • Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors Research Foundation (RICS)
    Launched in January 2000 to act as a leading body in the understanding of matters relating to the development, management and use of the built and natural environment.  RICS annual rural research ROOTS conference seeks to address major issues facing the countryside and rural life today.

  • Rural Europe - the Rural Development Network and the European LEADER Initiative
    The LEADER II rural development programme within Rural Europe aims to encourage, on the basis of local partnerships, the emergence and experimentation of rural territorial development strategies, integrated and in a pilot form. The new initiative encourages inter-territorial and transnational co-operation, and is applicable in all rural areas of the Community.

  • Rural Economy and Society Study Group (RESSG)
    The Rural Economy and Society Study Group (RESSG) is an informal network of researchers and practitioners with a shared interest in the economic, social and political issues affecting rural areas across Britain and Europe.  The aim of the RESSG is to draw on the expertise of policy-makers, practitioners and researchers in order to inform broader debates about rural change in advanced economies.  The group is inter-disciplinary in its make-up and approach.  It hosts an annual residential conference and a number of smaller topic-specific seminars and meetings throughout the year.

  • Rural Futures
    New coalition launched October 2000 to further the debate on the "crisis in the countryside" across the political divide and throughout society.  Coalition partners include Friends of the Earth, National Trust, RSPB, Soil Association and Nat. Federation of Womens' Institutes, with combined membership of over 4 million people.   Seven key statements issued to start the debate rolling...

  • Rural Policy
    A joint exercise, initiated by two Directorates-General from the European Commission, to review policy objectives and strategies, and produce a new vision for the European Commission’s development cooperation in the rural sector.  The joint consulting team comprises ADE, ODI and Qwentès.

  • Rural Transfer Network
    Supported by the EU’s Northern Periphery Programme, the Scottish Executive and the Lowland LEADER Network, this project is examining the development and transfer of new knowledge and good practice in relation to sustainable rural development in the northern periphery.

  • The Rural Update Newsletter
    Monthly compilation of news and resources on rural community economic development from the Rural Economic Policy Program at the Aspen Institute.

  • Scottish Agricultural College (SAC)
    SAC's mission is to enhance the sustainability of rural areas and communities and the viability of the industries on which they depend.  SAC undertakes advanced education and training, specialist research and development and expert advisory and consultancy work across a wide range of subjects, but with a particular emphasis on food, land and business management.

  • Scottish Community Development Centre
    Based in Glasgow, the SCDC works collaboratively with networks across Scotland and Europe to support best practice in community development in a wide range of disciplines including: social work, community education, health, housing, planning and economic development.

  • The Scottish Enterprise Network
    Scottish Enterprise is the leading economic development agency in Scotland, working with partners in industry, government and academia to make Scotland "a better place in which to live, work and invest".

  • The Scottish Office Central Research Unit
    The Scottish Office Central Research Unit (CRU) provides a research service to all Scottish Office Departments, principally in relation to social policy but also covering other scientific areas such as certain transport, rural and environmental issues.

    WORD is part of the National Assembly for Wales in Cardiff, and provides research funding and activities in support of high-quality health and social care research.

  • Western Agri-Food Institute
    Created to study emerging economic, social and environmental issues and trends which have the potential to affect the agriculture and food sector in Western Canada.  The Institute aims to generate relevant, timely and unbiased information to assist in strategic planning for the future of agri-food, agriculture and rural community development in Wester Canada, and to foster healthy, prosperous rural communities.

    Contact details for the ASCC, representing 1200 Community Councils in Scotland.

  • BBC Analysis Programmes
    Transcripts of BBC Radio 4 Analysis programmes, celebrated for 30 years for authoritative, in-depth examination of ideas and influences in policy and society, covering topics such as health, equality, heritage, religion, polity, etc.

  • Crofters Commission
    Based in Inverness in Scotland, the Crofters Commission aims to promote a thriving crofting community, and was set up in 1955 to develop and regulate the crofting system and to promote the interests of crofters.

  • The Cairngorms Partnership
    The Cairngorms Partnership was established in 1994 to prepare and implement a Management Strategy for the Cairngorms that would guarantee a sustainable future for this most special area of Scotland.

    The wider Partnership includes the people who own and manage the land; those who seek recreation in the area; those who live and work locally; and those with a statutory interest, such as the local authorities and a wide range of agencies.  Overall, there are well over a hundred groups involved in the work of the Partnership at all levels.

    The HAC is a national non-profit corporation created to increase the availability of affordable housing in rural areas throughout the United States.  It provides loans, publications, technical assistance and training for local, state and national organizations.

  • Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS)
    Independent research organisation providing economic analysis of public policy.   Includes 'Green Budget 2001', launched 31 January 2001.

  • National Housing Federation

  • Northern Rural Partnership
    Based in Lancashire, NRP supports local training networks and other rural initiatives by providing practical services and facilities.  NRP is a member of the East Lancashire Training and Enterprise Council.

  • The Open University Broadcast Schedules
    Open2.NET:  the home of Open University broadcasts on the BBC, on which you can check out the TV and radio listings (Social Change, Earth & Life programmes, etc.) and order your free programme guide. You can even sign up for a course.

  • Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development
    The OECD, representing 30 member countries, provides governments a setting in which to discuss, develop and perfect economic and social policy.  It aims to clarify the impact of national policies on the international community.

    The Cabinet Office Social Exclusion Unit website contains links to published reports and national strategy consultation.

    A London-based network and forum on sustainable development which has promoted outcomes from the first Earth Summit in 1992, and which is now working in preparation for Earth Summitt 2002.

  • VM (2) GROUP

    Comprehensive Bibliographic Search page from ELDIS, facilitating search for books, journals, papers, people and organisations.  Hosted by the Institute of Development Studies, Sussex, Eldis is a gateway to online information on development.  Coverage includes social, economic, political and environmental issues.

  • The Arkleton Trust
    The Arkleton Trust does not make awards or give grants, but it does administer three small funds in support of its aim "to study new approaches to rural development and education" and "improve understanding between rural policy makers, academics, practitioners and rural people".

  • Association of Commonwealth Universities
    Through the provision of Scholarships and Fellowships, the ACU demonstrates its commitment to increasing staff and student mobility and institution building throughout the Commonwealth and beyond.

  • Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC)
    BBSRC funds research in seven key areas of science and supports over 7000 scientists, postgraduate students and support staff in UK research institutes and universities.

  • British Academy Research Funding
    The Academy supports research at postdoctoral level in the humanities and social sciences.   Guidance provided on how to apply for each kind of award.

  • British Council Higher Education Links Scheme
    The Higher Eduction Links scheme supports links between higher education institutions in the UK and in forty-eight less developed countries, to promote the indigenous generation and application of knowledge and skills.  Initial support for 3 years, including visits between institutions, books and equipment.

  • British Council - Joint Research Programmes
    Joint Research Programmes facilitate collaborative links between research groups at publicly funded institutions in the United Kingdom and other countries.   Grants are offered as contributions towards international travel and living costs, for approved projects of up to three years.

  • Carnegie Trust for the Universities of Scotland
    Research grants, scholarships or assistance with fees - available for staff, graduates and students of Scottish universities.

  • CORDIS (Community Research and Development Information Service)
    European Commission service offering access to information on EU research and the EU Fifth Framework Programme.  Helps locate funding sources and find partners for R&D.

  • Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC)
    The UK's leading funding agency for research and training into social and economic issues.   The ESRC funds high quality research and training by awarding over £63 million of grants to researchers and postgraduate students throughout the UK.

  • European Science Foundation
    The ESF supports a limited number of Exploratory Workshops, which allows leading European scientists and scholars to meet to explore novel ideas at the European level with the aim of "spearheading" new areas of research.

  • Natural Environment Research Council (NERC)

  • Nuffield Foundation
    Based in London, the Nuffield Foundation is an independent charity which makes grants to support research and innovation.  Trustees give grants in the fields of Education, Science, Social research and innovation, Health, Disability and Ageing.

  • Scottish Research
    Funded by SHEFC, www.scottishresearch.com is a user friendly, searchable database that contains information on Scottish Universities research capabilities, including institute information, individual researcher records, research group records, project and service information.   • The Scottish Higher Education Funding Council (SHEFC)
    SHEFC provides financial support for teaching, research and associated activities in over 18 Scottish higher education institutions.  The Council is a non-departmental public body responsible to the Scottish Executive through the Scottish Executive Enterprise and Lifelong Learning Department.  Its main functions are:  to distribute funds to support teaching and research in higher education institutions;  to secure that provision is made for assessing the quality of higher education supported by the Council; and to provide Scottish Ministers with information and advice relating to all aspects of higher education in Scotland, including the financial needs of the sector.
