Guidelines for Windows XP/2000
Follow the step by step instructions to install the VPN components, connect to the University’s VPN, map your home filespace as a drive on your home laptop/PC, use the browser-based file explorer and access Library resources such as MetaLib.

- Install VPN components - do this first!
- Mapping your filespace
Allows you to use the VPN to access files stored on your filespace via My Computer or Windows Explorer, just as you would on your desktop PC at work.
Note: You must be using Internet Explorer 6 or above in order to map filespace. Other web browsers, such as Firefox or Opera, do not support drive mapping. - Using the browser-based file explorer
Note: Use the browser-based file explorer if your are not using your own laptop/PC (e.g. internet café), or if you do not have administrator rights on your laptop/PC (e.g. when using a departmental laptop).

Before you start
- you must have a current University of Aberdeen username and password
- you must have Administrator rights on your laptop/PC
- your web browser’s security settings must be set to enable the download of signed ActiveX controls – instructions below
- you must have up-to-date antivirus software
- you should ensure your Windows updates are current
Enable download of signed ActiveX controls
In order to install the VPN components successfully on your laptop/PC, you must first enable Download signed ActiveX controls in your browser’s Internet Security Settings.
- From Internet Explorer’s Tools menu, select Internet Options…
- Click on the Security tab then select the Internet (globe) icon
- Click on the Custom Level… button
- Click on the Enable radio button next to Download signed ActiveX controls
- Click on OK, and OK again.
Once the VPN components have been installed, you can return Download signed ActiveX controls to its original setting.
