Guidelines for Windows Vista
Follow the step by step instructions to install the VPN components, connect to the University’s VPN, use the browser-based file explorer and access Library resources such as MetaLib.

Before you start
- you must have a current University of Aberdeen username and password
- you must have Administrator rights on your laptop/PC
- your web browser’s security settings must be set to enable the download of signed ActiveX controls – instructions below
- you must have up-to-date antivirus software
- you should ensure your Windows updates are current
- you should ensure you use a 32bit web browser if your PC has a 64bit Windows OS
Enable download of signed ActiveX controls
In order to install the VPN components successfully on your laptop/PC, you must first enable Download signed ActiveX controls in your browser’s Internet Security Settings.
- From Internet Explorer’s Tools menu, select Internet Options…
- Click on the Security tab then select the Internet (globe) icon
- Click on the Custom Level… button
- Click on the Enable radio button next to Download signed ActiveX controls
- Click on OK, and OK again.
Once the VPN components have been installed, you can return Download signed ActiveX controls to its original setting.
