Guidelines for Windows Vista

Follow the step by step instructions to install the VPN components, connect to the University’s VPN, use the browser-based file explorer and access Library resources such as MetaLib.

Before you start

you must have a current University of Aberdeen username and password
you must have Administrator rights on your laptop/PC
your web browser’s security settings must be set to enable the download of signed ActiveX controls – instructions below
you must have up-to-date antivirus software
you should ensure your Windows updates are current
you should ensure you use a 32bit web browser if your PC has a 64bit Windows OS

Enable download of signed ActiveX controls

In order to install the VPN components successfully on your laptop/PC, you must first enable Download signed ActiveX controls in your browser’s Internet Security Settings.

From Internet Explorer’s Tools menu, select Internet Options…
Click on the Security tab then select the Internet (globe) icon
Click on the Custom Level… button
Click on the Enable radio button next to Download signed ActiveX controls
Click on OK, and OK again.

Once the VPN components have been installed, you can return Download signed ActiveX controls to its original setting.
