Biography
Steven MacLennan is currently the Research Fellow on the Cancer Research Aberdeen and Noth East Scotland (CRANES) funded project to develop a core outcome set for prostate cancer effectiveness trials. He joined Academic Urology Unit in 2009 as a Macmillan funded Research Fellow in the UCAN systematic review team to produce systematic reviews of surgical and non-surgical interventions in differeing stages of urological cancers.
Steven studied for PhD in sociology at the University of Edinburgh, during which time he also worked for Baccus Consulting doing primary research, literature reviews and monitoring reports in public health. Prior to this Steven completed a postgraduate Master of Research degree and an undergraduate honours degree in Applied Social Sciences.

Current Research
Core outcomes in prostate cancer effectiveness trials
Phase 1 - What outcomes have previously been reported, and what outcomes are important to patients?
- Systematic review of previously reported outcomes
- Focus groups with patients who have been treated for prostate cancer to ascertain which outcomes they see as important
Phase 2 - Delphi study - which outcomes are the most important to all stakeholder?
- Initial consensus meeting with key stakeholders (patients, clinicians and NHS heads of service) to shorten the list of important outcomes
- 2 rounds of questionnaires to rank list the most important outcomes
- Second consensus meeting with key stakeholders to decide upon a core set of outcomes
Phase 3 - Feasibility study - Is it feasible to collect data on the core outcome set?
- A prospective cohort study of patients undergoing prostate cancer treatments to assess how easy/difficult it is to collect data on the core outcome set.
Sytematic Reviews of oncological, perioperative and quality of life outcomes in surgical and non-surgical interventions in urological cancers
Some recently completed systematic reviews and ongoing reviews include:
- The surgical management of localised renal cell cancer
- Should adrenalectomy and/or lymph node dissection be done at the time of nephrectomy in locally advanced renal cell cancer?
- The surgical and non-surgical management of localised prostate cancer
- The surgical and non-surgical management of localised penile cancer
- The management of testicular Cancer
- The management of bladder cancer
The UCAN systematic review team are also interested in methodological issues. Recent work includes the problem of how best to assess the risks of bias in non-randomised studies when they are included in systematic reviews; and the problems of extracting hazard ratios from survival curves for meta-analyses in observational studies.
Steven also retains an active interest in and publishes collaboratively in sociology.
