Internal Scan (Transvaginal Scan)

Why?

If you are very early in your pregnancy or the baby is in an awkward position you may have an 'internal scan' (transvaginal scan) in order to see the baby. This is a bit like having a smear test. Sometimes an internal scan is done later in pregnancy to look at the neck of the womb, or a particular part of the baby's anatomy.

What happens?

You will have to take off your underclothes as the probe is inserted into the vagina.

What are the advantages?

It is not painful and gives very good pictures of the womb, its contents, and ovaries.
