Redundancy
We have negotiated a new University policy on redundancy, published online here. The main point in it is that 5-6 months before your expected end date you should be placed on a redeployment register. That allows you to apply for University of Aberdeen jobs two weeks in advance of them being advertised (either internally or externally) – giving you a two week head start.
Also note that for a redundancy to be valid, there must be a reduction in the work that you specifically are in place to carry out. A reduction in funding is not in of itself a valid reason for redundancy. A reduction in the general workload in your department is not a valid reason for you specifically to be singled out for redundancy. Some proposed redundancies have recently been found on investigation to not be valid, please contact AUCU if you think this may apply in your case.
We meet with management to discuss redundancy issues every two months in the Joint Consultative Committee on Redundancy Avoidance, chaired by Vice Principal Professor Dominic Houlihan, and with the Director of HR and other senior management figures in attendance. The two AUCU representatives at this committee are Andrew Fraser (DIT) and Dr Christine Sands (Engineering).
Regrettably around 100 posts (“The Future” positions) are currently being excluded from the two week redundancy application period. AUCU believes this is wrong and we are raising this at the Partnership Negotiating and Consultative Committee and at the Joint Consultative Committee on Redundancy Avoidance . UCU’s Regional Officer for Scotland has also written expressing concerns to Senior Vice Principal Professor Steve Logan. There has been no reply or resolution to this as of 29-May-2012. We will update this page as soon as we have more information on this.
