htm2rtf - an HTML to RTF converter for DOS
This utility allows you to convert Web pages, saved in HTML format,
to RTF (Rich Text Format).
Once in RTF format, they can then be opened and edited by most modern word
processing programs, such as Microsoft Word (version 2 or later).
This program is written and supplied as freeware by
Yves
SAGNIER
(Sagnier_Yves@cena.dgac.fr).
What can be converted:
- HTML tables are converted into Word Processing tables
- Formatted (e.g. bold or italic text) is preserved
- Headings are preserved
- <STRONG> or <EM> tags are converted to bold text.
- <A HREF = ....> instructions have the text rendered as underlined
(like by the browser).
- Text alignment (e.g. centering) is preserved in the conversion.
- Embedded lists (ordered and unordered) are correctly rendered as HTML lists.
What is not converted:
- Any in-line images in the original Web pages are not included in the
converted RTF files (although their names are included as
hidden characters at the corresponding place in the document).
How to use it:
- Download and save the file htm2rtf.exe (36
kb) to a suitable directory on your hard disk.
(If you prefer, and know how to extract zip format files, then you can
download the file in zipped format: htm2rtf.zip - 22 kb).
- Start the program, either from DOS (by typing htm2rtf), or from
the Windows File Manager. You will be prompted for an input file name (the
name of the HTML file that you wish to convert). Note - this file
must already be saved locally on your hard disk before you can convert
it (using the File-Save as command in Netscape)... you cannot convert
an on-line Web page.
- The output RTF file will be placed in the same directory as the input
file.
- Type the command cls if you want to remove the yellow coloration
from your DOS screen after use.
- The program creates a log file named "trace.doc" in the same
directory as the program itself. This file contains information (in French!) on HTML
tags that have not been processed, and any syntax errors found in the HTML
file.
