Arachnophilia - an HTML Editor for Windows 95
About Arachnophilia:
Arachnophilia is an HTML editor for Windows 95. It is provided without cost
as "careware" (see
http://www.arachnoid.com/lutusp/arach.html).
Arachnophilia has several useful features:
-
You can import RTF (rich text format) documents into Arachnophilia, and they
will be converted into HTML. This provides a convenient way of converting
word processor documents (saved in RTF format) into Web pages. Tables in
the original document will be converted to HTML tables in the resultant Web
pages. However, figures and images in the original document are omitted from
the final HTML document, and have to be inserted afterwards as references
to .GIF or .JPG files.
-
It is possible to edit both HTML documents and CGI scripts. Multiple files
can be open at the same time.
-
Arachnophilia provides a "Site Analyser" tool, which aims to "examine
your site in depth, finding links that go nowhere and resources that are
not used". The Site Analyser scans all HTML documents in the current working
directory, and produces a list of all the hyper-links that exist in these
documents. The list is organised to show: a) all referenced on-site files,
and the source documents which point to them; b) all un-referenced on-site
resources; c) all links which point to non-existent files or off-site resources.
-
There is an optional "Autocopy" feature, which copies all locally referenced
files into one "working directory", and converts their hyperlinks to the
relative path form. This means that files do not "go missing" from your document
structure, and the whole directory can be moved en masse without
disrupting any links.
-
Arachnophilia color-codes the HTML document's tags, so they are easy to identify.
-
There is a multiple-level "Undo" function.
-
The program comes with an excellent set of help-files.
Arachnophilia does not contain a built-in preview function, and so must be
used in conjunction with a browser, to view the appearance of the final Web
pages.

Installing Arachnophilia:
-
Download and save the self-extracting executable file
aracstor.exe (1.29 Mb) to a suitable directory
on your PC's hard disk.
-
From the DOS prompt, change into this directory and type aracstor
to run the self-extracting program. Nine files will be unpacked onto your
hard disk, one of which is called setup.exe . You can now delete
aracstor.exe.
-
In the Windows 95 Explorer, open the setup.exe file. This will start
up the installation program. You will be prompted for a directory to which
to install Arachnophilia.
-
Once Ararchnophilia is installed, you can run it from the program bar, or
create an icon for it. You may also wish to specify an external browser for
use by Arachnophilia as a previewer.
-
If you wish to remove Arachnophilia, there is an uninstaller program,
uninst.exe, amongst the original unpacked setup files.
