HTML Editors

This is a collection of HTML editors, which are designed to speed up the process of constructing Web pages. Some of these editors function as "add-ons" to existing programs, whilst others are free-standing.

Note that if you are using the Netscape Navigator 3.0 Gold WWW browser to view this page, then you already have an excellent "what you see is what you get"-type HTML editor built-in to that program. (See the Computing Centre publication HTML2: HTML Authoring using Netscape Navigator 3.0 Gold for further details). Netscape Navigator 3.0 Gold is available in the /dos/common/internet area of the central UNIX fileservers.

Internet Assistant functions as an add-in for Microsoft Word 6 for Windows. It allows you to use Word for Windows to compose, edit and save documents in HTML format. There is also a built-in (but slow) browser for viewing Web pages. You must have Word 6 installed on your PC before you can use Internet Assistant.
Arachnophilia is a fully-featured text-based HTML editor for Windows 95. It can convert RTF (rich text format) documents into HTML, and has facilities for editing CGI scripts.
Hotmetal is a text-based HTML editor. It is very rigorous in checking for correct HTML syntax. It provides document templates, and supports HTML forms. Versions are available for Windows 3.1 and UNIX SunOS.
HTML Assistant for Windows 3.1 is a free-standing text-based HTML editor. It is a fairly simple and easy to use editor for Web pages. Pull-down menus and push buttons let you select the elements for your pages.
WebWiz for Windows 3.1 is a very simple to use editor that merely requires you to fill-in a series of forms describing each part of your Web page. Although it cannot handle the more complex elements of Web publishing such as forms, it is useful if you simply want to put some text, perhaps with an attached image, onto the Web.
