These utilities help you to convert documents between HTML and other commonly-used formats.
These utilities can convert various file formats into HTML. For example, you could write your Web pages in your favourite word processor, and then convert them to Web format (i.e. HTML) without needing to insert HTML tags yourself.
| rtftohtml: A filter to translate RTF to HTML. Many word processing or DTP packages allow you to save documents in RTF (rich text format). This program can convert RTF files into HTML documents. Rtftohtm is available for MS-DOS, Macintosh and UNIX. Some knowledge of either DOS or UNIX commands is required for those versions. | |
| Arachnophilia offers a more user-friendly way for Windows 95 users to convert documents via RTF to HTML. Just open an RTF document in the Arachnophilia HTML editor, and the conversion is done automatically. Any tables in the original document are converted into HTML tables. | |
| Internet Assistant, an extension to Microsoft Word 6 for Windows, allows you to open existing Word documents and then save them in HTML format. Embedded images and tables are not converted to their HTML equivalents by this program, however. | |
| XL2HTML converts a range of cells from a Microsoft Excel 5.0 spreadsheet into an HTML table. This is a very convenient way of generating HTML tables quickly, without having to deal with HTML tags. | |
| Table Generator for Windows 3.1 or 95 converts an array of data in "Comma Separated Values" (CSV) or tab-delimited format into an HTML table. Note that this provides a convenient way of converting tables from Microsoft Word documents into HTML tables. | |
| wptohtml is a macro which converts WordPerfect 5.1 or 6.0 for DOS documents to HTML. |
As more useful material becomes available on the Web, there is an increasing demand for tools that allow you to save Web pages as simple text files, or as word processor documents. The following tools allow you to remove the HTML tags from Web documents:
| htm2rtf is a simple DOS program that converts HTML files into RTF (Rich Text Format). The RTF files can then be read into most modern word processing programs. Elements of text formatting such as lists and headings are preserved in the conversion process. HTML tables are converted into word processor tables. In-line images are not converted. | |
| Internet Assistant, an extension to Microsoft Word 6 for Windows, provides a convenient way of converting Web pages into Word documents. Just open the required Web page, using Internet Assistant's built-in (though rather slow) Web Browser, and then Save As... a normal Word document (filename.doc). In this case, images are saved as part of the document, but HTML tables are not displayed correctly. | |
| Webtable enables you to copy data from an on-line WWW table viewed in Netscape, and convert it into a suitable format for pasting directly into a Windows spreadsheet (such as Microsoft Excel). | |
| Remove-It for Windows 3.1 is a simple HTML tag removal tool, for converting HTML documents into plain text files. | |
|
|
Web2Text for Windows 3.1 and Win95, is a freeware program which converts HTML files into ASCII (plain text) files. Unlike most other such programs, Web2Text attempts to create a text file that retains some of the layout of the web page being converted. It also leaves URLs intact in the document, and is capable of batch conversion (processing a large number of files at once). |
| Note: Perhaps the easiest way to convert an HTML file to plain text is to use a WWW browser. Both Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Internet Explorer allow you to save the currently-viewed Web page as a plain text file (with a .txt filename extension). Use the File - Save As command. |
