News from initiative on biogas digesters in SSA
The first DFID project has finished. The work established a new network of researchers working in biogas digesters in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), involved two workshops in Uganda and Ethiopia, has been published in three DFID reports and has resulted in three further proposals; two submitted to AUC-HRST (worth a total of ~1,500,000 Euros – decision pending), and one submitted to DFID (worth ~£200,000 – funded). It will also produce a special issue of the journal Biomass and Bioenergy, due for publication in May 2012. A further proposal is also being prepared for submission to the EU in November on biowaste treatment in SSA. This expands the work to include composting and pyrolysis. The next DFID project is due to start in January 2012, and will allow us to look in detail at the potential of flexible balloon digesters for use in Uganda.

World Development Report 2012: Gender Equality and Development
The World Bank, September 2011 “…..The lives of girls and women have changed dramatically over the past quarter century. The pace of change has been astonishing in some areas, but in others, progress toward gender equality has been limited—even in developed countries. This year's World Development Report: Gender Equality and Development argues that gender equality is a core development objective in its own right. It is also smart economics. Greater gender equality can enhance productivity, improve development outcomes for the next generation, and make institutions more representative.
