14 September 2010 Centre for Sustainable International Development launched at the University of Aberdeen Centre director Dr Hilary Homans said the aim was to harness some of the expertise already in place at the university and elsewhere in areas such as deforestation, drought-resistant crops, bio-energy and renewable energy. It will also raise awareness about sustainable international development, encourage new strategic partnerships and provide opportunities for research groups and individuals to work together. The centre will pinpoint the areas in which the university can do more to respond to the needs of people in the developing world and help academics to secure resources for research and capacity building to meet the needs of the poor.
