'HIV, A Threat to Stability and Security?
Dr Homans is currently working with the UN on a report to document progress since the adoption of the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1308. This resolution was the first to address an issue of human development by the Security Council due to the perceived threat of the HIV epidemic to stability and security. The presentation will assess the current situation and whether this threat remains.

From pledges to action: The Partnership for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health
From Pledges to Action is a high-level political event to consolidate commitments and accelerate progress towards MDGs 4 and 5. Over three days in November, approximately 700 health and development ministers, senior government and UN officials, donors, health care professionals, civil society representatives and academics from around the world will strategize on supporting the commitments made to the Global Strategy for Women's and Children's Health, launched by the UN Secretary-General at the MDG Summit in September.

The specific objectives of the symposium are to: • share state-of-the art research on universal health coverage; • develop a global agenda of priority research on accelerating progress towards universal health coverage; • facilitate greater research collaboration and learning communities across disciplines, sectors, initiatives and countries; • strengthen the scientific rigor of the field of health systems research including concepts, frameworks, measures and methods; • identify mechanisms for strengthening capacities – individual, institutional and infrastructural – for research on health systems particularly in low- and middle-income countries.
