This programme provides advanced training in social research. It equips students with the skills they need to undertake independent research, using a range of methodologies, and through the dissertation, students are able to develop practical, intellectual and critical skills in their specific areas of interest.
For students who wish to undertake a PhD in Sociology, the programme is also designed to provide the support and training required to complete the first stages of doctoral research.

Students attend the following programme of courses:
Advanced Social Theory (30 credit points)
Qualitative Sociological Research (30 credit points)
Approaches to Quantitative Analysis (30 credit points)
Quantitative Sociological Research (30 credit points)
Stage 3 (MRes only)
Dissertation in Social Research (60 credit points)
A dissertation of at least 15,000 words in length must be submitted by all students taking the Masters in Social Research degree. Students intending to continue to PhD can use the dissertation to clarify their research question, review appropriate literature, explain and defend their research methods, and analyse and describe their preliminary findings.
For students completing their studies with the Masters of Research in Social Research the dissertation will report on a completed piece of independent research.
Assessment takes a variety of forms, including essays, assignments, reports and presentations for each individual course module and a 15,000 word dissertation on an agreed independent topic relevant to the Masters Programme.
Students are required to have a good first- or upper-second class degree in Sociology, or a related discipline, or where appropriate, relevant professional experience.
Two academic references are required.
The English Language Requirement for all College of Arts and Social Sciences Masters programmes is an IELTS of 6.5 with 6.0 in the writing and reading (or equivalent TOEFL iBT or PTE). For more information see www.abdn.ac.uk/international/english-requirements
