The University’s Accommodation Office can assist single international students in applying for University accommodation. Details of the range of accommodation available can be found on the Accommodation Office’s website: www.abdn.ac.uk/accommodation
At present there is no University housing provision for married couples.
There is a very limited amount of housing for international students with families. You cannot secure this housing without actually being in Aberdeen. You must apply in person. It can take some time to find available properties which are let to the University by Aberdeen City Council. The Council can only provide properties when they become vacant so you may have to be put on a waiting list. We recommend that if you want to bring your family with you, you should come alone at first so that you can sort out suitable accommodation and also visit local schools. When applying for a visa for your dependants, you will need to provide evidence of suitable accommodation for your family.
International students who are subject to immigration control (limited permission to stay in the UK) will normally have “No recourse to public funds” on their visa or biometric identity card. This means that they are not allowed to get low cost housing direct from Aberdeen City Council (or any other council) because it is classed as a public fund. However, housing for families can be let from the Council through the University (see University Accommodation section above).
Our Students’ Association advertise properties available in the private accommodation sector. It is difficult to obtain accommodation without having viewed a property first and without being present to sign a contract.
All housing contracts, whether University contracts or private contracts, are legally binding documents and as such, once you sign for accommodation, you will usually have to continue paying rent until the end of your lease or give notice that you intend to leave the property within the required period (subject to the terms and conditions of your lease).
