Who can use the Student Mail service?All registered undergraduate and taught postgraduate students can use the service. Once you have graduated, you may retain your University e-mail account as long as you wish. To create your mail account and select your mailname you must first complete the computing section of eReg (http://www.abdn.ac.uk/ereg)
How do I access the service?The Studentmail service at Aberdeen is web based. This means you can access your University e-mail both on and off campus - all you need is a web browser and an internet connection. You must first complete the computing section of your eReg (http://www.abdn.ac.uk/ereg) to set up your mail account and password. For full functionality, we recommend you use Internet Explorer 7, but you can also use other browsers such as Safari and Mozilla Firefox. How do I log in?Open your browser and go to the URL: https://www.outlook.com/aberdeen.ac.uk Login with your Studentmail username and password. If you don't have a Studentmail username and password, make sure you have completed e-registration at http://www.abdn.ac.uk/ereg What is my University e-mail address?Your e-mail address is allocated at the time of registration, as is your password, and will look something like: initial.surname.year@aberdeen.ac.uk - e.g. j.bloggs.09@aberdeen.ac.uk
What if I forget my e-mail address?If you forget your e-mail address, don't worry. Log into your Student Portal (www.abdn.ac.uk/studentportal) and click on the Personal Details tab. You will see your e-mail address listed under DIT Computing Centre Details. See an example here What is my mailbox quota?Your mailbox is kept on a Microsoft-managed fileserver. You have 10GB of file space.
Do I require any software for Studentmail?Studentmail is web based and can therefore be accessed using a web browser from any internet connection. Can I use Windows Live Messenger?

How much space do I have for e-mail?Your e-mail quota is set at 10GB. This includes your Inbox, Sent Items, Deleted Items and any e-mail folders you create. In other words, any items in the Folder list contribute to your usage. The quota also includes any calendar items you may have.
How do I check how much space I have used?Hover the mouse over your name in the folder list at the left side of Studentmail and a pop up will display how much space you have used. You will receive an e-mail warning when you near the limit of your account. Remember that once you reach the limit, you will not be able to send or receive messages. Is my e-mail protected against threats?Yes. All e-mail to and from Studentmail is scanned for viruses and security threats. Infected messages will not be sent. Junk mail filters are also in place which will identify any junk e-mail as Spam. What happens if I accidentally delete a message in Studentmail?Items you delete are initially sent to the Deleted Items folder. Go to this folder and drag the message back into your inbox. If you have emptied your Deleted Items folder by mistake, you can go to Options > Organize E-Mail > Deleted Items, find Recover Deleted Items and from there recover items for up to 30 days after you emptied the folder. What is the maximum size of e-mail I can send and receive?The maximum message size is 20MB including attachments
Can I filter my incoming messages?Yes. Go to Options > Organize E-Mail and set up Inbox Rules to filter your messages Can I check my e-mail using a mobile phone or PDA?Yes, providing you have a compatible handset. How can I send e-mail to other people? I don’t have their detailsUse the Global Address List to see the e-mail addresses of all Students at the University of Aberdeen. Click on the Address book icon at the top right of the screen to access the Global Address List. Can I redirect my e-mail to or from another account?It is possible to redirect e-mail from another account (e.g. googlemail, yahoo mail, BT Internet) into your Studentmail account. However, it is not possible to redirect e-mail out of Studentmail. To set up a redirection, login to Studentmail and click Options > Account. Under Other Accounts, click New and enter the details as given by your mail provider - you should see their support pages for the correct information as you may have to enable POP or IMAP settings. Note that any replies you send from within Studentmail will appear as coming from your Studentmail account, rather than your alternative e-mail account. What other services are available?Once you have registered for your new University e-mail account, may use your new e-mail address to login to Windows Live Messenger, Windows Live Skydrive and Windows Live for Mobile for access to Instant Messaging and e-mail.
How do I access Windows Live Services?Windows Live Messenger Windows Live Spaces Windows Live SkyDrive Windows Live for Mobiles What is Skydrive?Skydrive is online filespace where you can store files that you wish to access from any internet connection. You can access skydrive at http://skydrive.live.com. Skydrive is not backed up and if you delete a file, you will not be able to recover it. For coursework and other important items, we recommend that you save you files to your H:/drive which is hosted by the University of Aberdeen and is backed up every night. See our fact sheet PC013: Backing up your work for more information. How do I access Skydrive?Skydrive can be found at http://skydrive.live.com. Make sure you don't store anything here you can't afford to lose. Skydrive is not backed up and if you delete a file, you will not be able to recover it. How much online filespace do I have via Skydrive?Skydrive allows you to store up to 25GB of files online. This is in addition to your University H:/ drive.
Does Skydrive replace my H:/ drive?No. For coursework and important documents, you should still use your H:/ drive as it is backed up each night allowing accidentally deleted files to be recovered. Skydrive is not backed up and should be used only for files which are easily replaced (e.g. downloads).
