About The Club

Getting Ready

Lairig is the Aberdeen University Mountaineering Club. It is almost certainly the most active student mountaineering club in the UK, as well as one of the oldest and most well-established. Members participate in all mountain sports such as hillwalking and hiking, rock climbing, winter climbing, bouldering and ski touring. The clubs aims to get out and about as much as possible, and when dry, trips are run on Wednesday afternoons to local crags for rock climbing. Trips also take place almost every weekend to locations all over Scotland, favourite destinations including Skye, Torridon, and the Cairngorms. Keep an eye on the frequently updated Trips section of the website for more details. Due to the nature of the Scottish climate, and the timing of the university year, the majority of the clubs activities take place in winter. As a result the club specialises in winter mixed and ice climbing, however when the summer comes to Aberdeen, the local sea cliffs and crags provide first class rock climbing, often in dramatic settings.

Club members take part in both BUSA (now BUCS) and SUSF climbing competitions, in recent years achieving third place in the SUSF team competition, and a second place in the SUSF individual competition in 2006. Throughout the winter, fun bouldering competitions also take place at Dundee indoor wall, which many members attend when transport is available. In addition to climbing in Scotland and the UK as a whole, club members often travel to more far-flung destinations such as the Alps or Yosemite in the summer to climb in a more serious mountain environment.

No previous experience or equipment is necessary, as items such as harnesses and helmets can be borrowed from the club. However for weekend trips, suitable footwear for the hills and full waterproof clothing are essential.
