Careers and Co-Curriculum

The Careers Service offers careers guidance and information to all students at the University of Aberdeen and this is also extended to recent graduates and alumni. All staff, particularly Advisers of Study, will be interested in the range of both careers and co-curricular provision offered to undergraduates and taught postgraduates. This covers the following areas:

  • One-to-one guidance: including 15 minute discussions with the Duty Adviser (bookable online from the day before) and 30 or 45 minute Guidance Appointments. During term-time we have extended opening hours on Tuesdays with appointments available until 7.30pm. In addition, on Thursday mornings during term-time there are 30 minute appointments available at Foresterhill. Students should visit the What We Do section of our website for full details.
  • Workshops: Available on specific job sectors, CVs, applications, interviews and more. These can be tailored by subject or School. Students should look out for these advertised within their academic School or discipline.
  • Employability initiatives
  • Co-curricular opportunities: These are initiatives which enhance a student's degree and include, but are not restricted to
  • Work Placements: There is a dedicated Work Placement Team that sources local, national and international paid internships, summer placements and year-long placements.
  • Work-Based Projects for Masters students: The Learning To Work 2 (LTW2) team is dedicated to sourcing work-based projects for Masters students in collaboration with employers and organisations. Read the Centre for Learning and Teaching spotlight on the LTW2 initiative.
  • Careers Workshops, Events and Employer Presentations: These are held throughout each term. Students can access details and sign-up from the What's On section of the Careers Service website.
  • Recruitment/Employer Fairs: These are held annually and include the Law Fair, Engineering and IT Fair, Finance and Management Fair and the North of Scotland Graduate Recruitment Fair.
  • Vacancies: Being part of a shared vacancy service with most other HE institutions in Scotland ensures our students have access to a wide range of vacancies. In the first instance students need to visit our jobs site and follow the short registration process. This will allow them to receive regular email alerts of opportunties relevant to them.
  • Virtual Adviser Service: This service offers online CV and application form checks, career planning advice and online career discussions.
  • Information: The Careers Service has a well-stocked library within its open plan area on the 2nd Floor of the Hub. Students can find information on occupations, further study, work experience and making effective job applications. This is complemented by a comprehensive Virtual Library, containing in excess of 2,500 resources covering all aspects of career planning, including statistics on graduate first destinations and current labour market trends.
