More family time!!………

Thursday, April 23rd, 2009

Hello blog readers. My apologies for not have written in a long time. My only excuse is a mixture of being rather busy with uni work (curse those essays!) and having a rather bad memory. I think it is probable more of the latter though!

Well the last few weeks have been rather hectic. We have been on Easter break since the 27th March and I went home for the first week which was lovely. It was nice to see everyone who I hadn’t seen since Christmas and also just relax a little away from work and all of those books. It was however, a little strange being home….I think I am far too used to having my own flat. It was also a little different having a dog around again. Especially one that demands that much attention. Although I would not be without her!

Then the time came all too quickly for me to head back to the ‘deen. My mum found a wonderful way of not missing me over the Easter weekend and packed up the entire family to follow me back here! I really do think that she loves Aberdeen more than me! But it was lovely taking the dog to the beach and watch her playing in the sea. With the weather having been so nice, it was great to have to have the opportunity to get out and get some fresh air.

While they were here we had some wonderful days out in town shopping, and then having lunch with a nice cool drink. It was even more wonderful as I wasn’t paying for it. When it was my turn to buy it was to the Illicit Still for the buy one get one free food with my student card. But I was at least nice enough to take my sisters on a night out and to the cinema. We went to see The Boat that Rocked which I personally thought was fantastic. Definitely one of the better films of the year.

Also with my dad driving, we went down to Stonehaven which is a quaint little seaside town not far south from here. It’s also really easily accessible by bus which is great for when my personal taxi has gone home. But it was better being there with my dog watching her scramble into the sea and then fall over the pebble beach.

But now my family have left…..leaving destruction in their wake. I need to go and rescue my flat before my flatmate gets back on Monday. And then I have to turn my attention to the essay I have due next week. An essay which I was planning to do last week before I was invaded. Grrrrrr.

Enjoy being back in classes!

Family Time

Tuesday, April 14th, 2009

I’ve always loved the Easter Holidays as it’s been a nice break after a hectic few weeks attempting to get my coursework done on time (I am the Queen of Procrastination). Last term was a lot more busier than usual; I got the opportunity to go to the Parent’s Evenings in Scotland and do the Student Life talks (some of you may remember me as being the slightly nervous speaker at the end :-P) and then was elected President of the Aberdeen University’s Secular, Humanist and Atheist Society at the last AGM, so I had to quickly get used to organising committee meeting and sorting out paperwork, though I am exceptionally lucky to have an amazing Vice President to make sure I sign the right papers.

So 3 weeks off are always a welcome break and a good opportunity to catch with my family and friends, however I do have to admit spending the first week either asleep or glued to my TV catching up on my favourite soaps. This last week has been slightly more exciting as my mother travelled up  to come have a look at my flat and see what life was like for me in Aberdeen. So the day before there may have been some frantic tidying up and I have to admit to staying awake till 4am polishing my oven but the visit was definitely worth it. We wondered around the campus and I got show off my amazing campus tour skills that I’ve picked up over the last few years. We managed to find some lovely little cafes in the heart of the city centre, most memorable being the Jacques Creperie where I discovered a new love for smoked salmon and cream cheese savoury crepes. We also had an afternoon at the cinema where I insisted that we watch Monsters vs. Aliens 3D, which was quite cool though I don’t think my mother shared the same level of enthusiasm (she fell asleep).

So 2 weeks down and 1 left to go, and it’s already shaping up to be quite a fun filled week. Tonight I’m having a sort of mini reunion at my flat, a good chance to hear everyone’s gossip from over the Easter holidays, and I think one of my best friends from Newcastle (whom I haven’t seen in nearly a year) may be making an appearance. Then tomorrow I’m hosting a mini Easter dinner for my friends staying in Aberdeen and I’m think I’m attempting to cook a proper roast dinner, which should be interesting to see how it turns out. The rest of the week will then be spent getting the last of my coursework completed and generally catching up with old friends (I am a very popular woman :-P) and then getting ready for the last half of term.

So all in all I have to say it’s shaping up to be a very successful and relaxing Easter holiday. So until next time, I hope you’re all having a lovely break and a very Happy Chocolate Egg day.

Time to relax…almost

Wow! Can’t believe that’s another month gone and closer to exams eeek! Panic is beginning to slowly set-in for my final exams, but right now it’s the holidays and it’s a little hard to think about such things when surrounded by chocolate! I have to admit that I’m addicted to chocolate (as long as it’s not dark bleugh) so diets and exercise have been thrown out the window.  You may mock, but I watched HSM last night and tried to copy the dance moves. Needless to say I was somewhat unsuccessful, but hey! It was an attempt to exercise at least.

So, this month…what have I done? Perhaps not as much as last month as I’ve unbelievably busy with assessments and other such uni work. I did manage to find the time to pop down to Edinburgh for a few days to visit the city and friends.  I was really proud of myself when I found my way around the city BY MYSELF and without a map. See, university does teach you lifelong skills J  I felt sorry for the people on the bus to Edinburgh with me as my hand slightly smelt of henna- at the university a group are currently trying to raise money to help those in Gaza, so I helped my getting my hand henna-painted and eating traditional cake with honey and prunes yum yum. Whilst in Edinburgh my hand was a real conversation starter!

Other than that I’m still on the Language Ball committee so that’ll be the first week back after the holidays. To make tickets cheaper we’ve had a lot of bake sales (to cover the cost of wine!) and sold around 100 tickets which isn’t bad going at all. You never realise how much organisation is required until you’re on the committee!

On Saturday I had my big sis’s hen party which was mad! Gemma, my sister, decided on a 80s theme so we all had our leg warmers, pink shoes, crazy t-shirts and mini skirts on to comply! We started with crazy golf at the beach, then headed to a Mexican restaurant where we each got a goody bag filled with balloons, maracas and moustache lol! Gemma even got a sombrero hehe. After doing the congo around the restaurant, it was voted we go to Club Tropicana (80s nightclub) to continue the theme. Needless to say some of us are still recovering! Her wedding is Friday so at the moment we’re preparing the chocolate baskets and music. My boyfriend is even ironing his shirt for the wedding!!!

Next week I’ll be catching-up with all my uni work and friends, whilst also applying for a Masters degree-no rest for the wicked they say! Though apparently next Sunday my boyfriend is playing an ultimate Frisbee tournament so I may go and see that.

So wish us luck for the wedding and Frisbee game!
