    Writer-In-Residence Programme

Overview

The Writer-in-Residence Programme was established in 2000.

Writer in ResidenceSince 2000 Hispanic Studies at the University of Aberdeen has invited writers whose work is representative of the best contemporary narrative in Spanish to reside at the University for short periods (normally one semester). All full-time members of staff are actively engaged in research into narrative forms from a variety of perspectives: narrative and anthropology, psychoanalysis, visual culture, popular culture, genre, gender and sexuality. The Writer-in-Residence Programme feeds into one of the key research themes of Hispanic Studies and provides a welcoming environment for invited writers.

The British magazine Granta has launched its Spanish edition this year, introducing into the Spanish market Scottish writers such as A.L. Kennedy, Ali Smith and Alan Warner. All Hispanic markets are extremely receptive to good writing being produced in the English language. A key aim of the programme is to facilitate cultural exchanges between Hispanic writers and those working in the Scottish context, and, by encouraging academic visibility, help promote further translations of new writing into the English language.

Present Writer-in-residence

Writer-in-residence 2004/05
Félix Romeo: 15th March to 30th April

Félix Romeo is the author of two-prize winning novels, Dibujos animados and Discothèque. He has also directed the TVE cultural programme “La Mandrágora” and has written for the press. He will be contributing to the Honours course “Creativity in Hispanic Writing”. He will take part in Word 2005. He will be accompanied by the writer and photographer Cristina Grande.

Teaching

Hispanic Studies runs a course on creativity at undergraduate level, SP3587 [Junior Honours] and SP4587 [Senior Honours] Creativity in Hispanic Writing. If you would like further information on this course please contact course co-ordinator Dr Trevor Stack.
