What student support is on offer?
At both institutional and Departmental level, we are concerned not only to create a stimulating learning environment, but also to offer appropriate support and help when you need it.
If you are experiencing problems or difficulties with your work, your course tutor or co-ordinator will be happy to try and help and is always available for initial consultations during his or her office hours.
If you think you may miss a deadline for assessed work, it is important to see your course co-ordinator in advance of the deadline. In exceptional circumstances you may be granted an extension. Bear in mind that work submitted late without a medical certificate or acceptable explanation will normally have two marks deducted if it is up to a week late, and you may fail a course or have your class certificate denied as a result.
Within the department, we place great emphasis on personal and constructive feedback for your work. After you have submitted an assessed essay, the course tutor will normally set aside time to see each student on an individual basis in order to return and discuss the work, and help your progress in future assessments. If you ever need clarification, or want to discuss feedback given for other assessed, or language work, your tutor will be happy to oblige during his or her office hours. Details of the criteria we apply and the marking scheme we use are given under assessment and evaluation.
The disabilities office co-ordinates support for disabled students at a departmental level. Nerea Arruti is the co-ordinator for students with disabilities. If you are having difficulty accessing a particular room or building, she can arrange a change of venue or group so that access is convenient for you. Special arrangements can also be made for examinations and assessments.
If you suspect you may be dyslexic, Nerea Arruti will refer you for help and support. If you are dyslexic, special arrangements can be made for assessments and examinations.
If you are experiencing a problem that is affecting, or likely to affect, your work, it is important that you let someone know. Do not hesitate to contact a member of the Department. She or he will listen sympathetically, and will respect your confidence in personal matters. If appropriate, she or he will be able to refer you for help or support to someone with training and experience. There are a number of other individuals whom you can contact for advice:
