How is the Degree structured and how do I enter Honours in Hispanic Studies? The degree structure normally covers five years from entry to graduation (Mode A) or four years from entry to graduation (Mode B). More information on Mode A and Mode B is given below. A period of residence in a Spanish-speaking country is normally required between the second and third years or at the end of the third year.
Admission to the Honours programme is at the discretion of the Head of Department. In order to gain entry to Honours in Hispanic Studies, you should normally have an average mark of 12 in all Level Two Hispanic Studies courses. In line with University regulations, you must have a total of 240 credits before entering the Honours programme. These must normally include all relevant Level one and two language courses, plus credits obtained in the following designated content courses in Hispanic studies:
There are two principal routes into Honours in Hispanic Studies, one for candidates who enter University with a Higher or 'A' Level pass in Spanish, and one for students with no previous knowledge of the Spanish language. Often students who enter the Department as beginners go on to become very successful Honours candidates. These routes into Honours are sketched out below:

Shortly after the May/June diet of examinations, at the end of your second year, you will receive a letter offering you a place in Honours in Hispanic Studies from the Honours Adviser. You should write to him immediately confirming that you wish to enter the Hispanic Studies Honours Programme. Mode A and Mode B Single Honours degrees in Hispanic Studies and all joint Honours degrees involving Hispanic Studies, with the exception of Accountancy-Hispanic Studies, French-Hispanic Studies, Geography-Hispanic Studies, German-Hispanic Studies, and Hispanic Studies-Mathematics are available either as Mode A degrees including a full academic year spent in a Spanish-speaking country, or as Mode B degrees including half an academic year spent in a Spanish-speaking country. Mode A degrees are thus 5 years long from entry to graduation, whereas Mode B degrees are 4 years long. For both Mode A and Mode B degrees the programme for years 1 and 2 is identical and no final decision as to whether to take Mode A or Mode B need be made before December of Year 2. For Joint Honours in Accountancy-Hispanic Studies, Geography-Hispanic Studies, and Hispanic Studies-Mathematics, a full academic year is spent in a Spanish-speaking country.
For Joint Honours in French-Hispanic Studies and German-Hispanic Studies, half an academic session is spent in a Spanish-speaking country, and a further half session in a country in which the other language is spoken.
