  What skills will Hispanic Studies give me?

We aim to offer you a well-rounded and useful education in Hispanic Studies, firstly giving you a solid foundational knowledge of Hispanic culture and language during the first two years of the programme, and then allowing you to specialise in areas that particularly interest you. We also aim to equip you with valuable transferable skills.

Pre-Honours Students

The courses the Department offers at Levels one and two aim to:

• help students acquire or extend competence and accuracy in the written and spoken Spanish language
• help students gain an awareness of cultural issues in the Hispanic world and learn how to analyse and appreciate critically Hispanic literature, history, society, and visual representation
• provide a useful grounding in the Spanish language and Hispanic culture which can stand alone for students not wishing to pursue Honours options, but which also serves as an appropriate foundation for more advance study of Spanish at Honours level
• promote Spanish as an exciting and valuable subject both in its own right and for the wider skills it fosters
• deepen self-understanding by facing the issues raised in meeting other and different cultures

Honours Students

The courses the department offers and levels three and four aim to:

• help students acquire a highly accurate and sophisticated grasp of the written and spoken Spanish language in a variety of registers and contexts
• allow students to specialise in various areas of Hispanic literature, visual representation, and history, deepening and extending their understanding of the Hispanic world and its culture, and refining their analytical and critical skills
• build upon the transferable skills offered by courses in levels one and two. The Department aims to produce honours graduates who are valued not only for their subject knowledge and skills, but also for the balanced and flexible range of transferable skills that a degree in Hispanic Studies from Aberdeen offers.

In general, all courses in the Department seek to encourage a broad range of transferable skills. These include: independent thinking, analysis, and decision-making; preparation and presentation of cogent arguments; oral and written communication skills; time-management and resource-management skills; document preparation skills, including computer and word-processing skills; group work and team work.
