What can I do during my residence abroad?

Modern Languages has designed a website dedicated exclusively to students about to embark on their year abroad. If you are currently planning your year abroad bookmark this website:

A period of residence in a Spanish speaking country is normally an obligatory component of the degree structure. Year abroad arrangements are usually made by the Department, but you may make your own arrangements if you so wish. During your second year you will be invited to a series of meetings by the departmental Year Abroad Co-ordinator, Dr Trevor Stack. The purpose of the meetings is to inform you of the options available for your residence in a Spanish-speaking country. These include:
The Alhambra, Granada

Residence abroad is an invaluable opportunity both to improve language skills and to acquire a wealth of experience and skills that students find extremely useful both on return to Aberdeen and also for life after graduation.

For further information concerning Residence Abroad, you should attend the first meeting at which you will receive written information detailing the various options open to you.

We also have some pages designed to answer further questions and to explain the various options available to you in order to fulfil your residence abroad requirements for Hispanic Studies.

Residence abroad in a Spanish-speaking country is a compulsory component of your degree but there are a number of ways of structuring the period of residence within your studies depending on whether you intend to do a Single or Joint Honours degree, whether you complete your degree in four or five years, and whether you intend to specialise in Latin American or Peninsular Studies.

As far as what you do whilst you are abroad, the Department's policy is to allow you as free a choice as possible. However, to help you to make an informed and appropriate decision, we aim to provide you with our own Departmental information and guidelines and to direct you to other sources of information.

Guidelines

The Residence Abroad Co-ordinator, Dr Trevor Stack, will go over your options with you during the Residence Abroad meetings. They will make arrangements for SOCRATES Exchanges and are also available to offer help and advice. You may also find it helpful to approach other members of staff within the Department who may have experience of different regions of Spain, or countries within Latin America.
