ProblemsThe staff are happy to answer queries you may have about the Department and its courses. We set aside certain times each week to deal exclusively and specifically with your questions and problems. These times, known as Office Hours, are posted on each tutor's door, and work on a walk-in basis: you need not make an appointment to see the tutor during these hours. Outside these hours, we may not always be available to help you immediately (after all, we are responsible not only for teaching matters, but also for research and for administering the Department and related University activities). If you need to see us outside our Office Hours, please make an appointment beforehand unless your enquiry or problem is urgent.
Remember that most tutors are also contactable by email, and you may additionally leave messages for your tutor in the Languages Secretariat.
The Languages Secretariat is located in room A26, on the first floor of the Taylor Building, A Block. You are expected to submit assessed essays to the Secretariat and you may leave messages for your tutors there. There are three secretaries in this office, Marjorie Taylor (Senior Secretary), Joan Wilkinson, and Glenda Inglis, all of whom will accept messages for tutors and answer your questions.
Pam Thompson is the Executive Assistant within the Modern Languages Secretariat and as well as providing administrative support for the Head of Department of Hispanic Studies, also provides support for the Convenor of the School of Modern Languages and the Heads of the Departments of Celtic, French, and German. Whilst general enquiries should be made through the Secretariat in A26, Mrs Thompson will be available to help with matters of a confidential nature and in the absence of the Honours Adviser will take messages relating to alterations to Honours courses. Mrs Thompson is in room A28, email p.thompson@abdn.ac.uk.
Enquiries about a specific course, including questions about, or problems with, timetabling, assessment, deadlines, or course content, should be addressed to the relevant course co-ordinator.
If you are an Honours student, you should see the Departmental Honours Advisor, Julia Biggane.
If you are a level one or level two student, you should see your Adviser of Studies in the first instance, and then inform the Department in writing of your decision.
Enquiries about residence abroad should be addressed to the Residence Abroad Co-ordinator, Dr Joe Rodríguez. Bear in mind that he will co-ordinate meetings during the academic session to provide information and answer general queries.
General enquiries about examination matters should be addressed to the Examinations Office, Nerea Arruti. If your enquiry is course specific, address it in the first instance to the relevant course co-ordinator.
