What additional facilities are available within the University that are directly relevant to Hispanic Studies students?

University life differs from school in that we place a great deal of emphasis on student independence and initiative. We can provide you with a stimulating and supportive environment in which to learn, but it is up to you to make the most of it.

Throughout the University there are facilities and events that you can take advantage of in the course of your studies. Some of the following facilities are available for your use:

The Language Centre has a range of Spanish audio and video material for private study. It also has satellite TV and videos so that you can catch the news or even a Spanish-language soap opera. In fact, often course assessments take the form of tasks that are based on the use of facilities such as those available in the Language Centre.

The Languages Reading Room is located in the Taylor Building and also has Satellite TV, video recorder, and computers. It is an all-purpose room especially equipped for language students and some of its uses include: "intercambios" noticeboard, venue for film screenings, venue for Spanish language coffee hours, a resource room with information about careers and residence abroad, venue for Language Society functions.

The Hispanic Society is run by students within the Department and organises regular functions. Look out for notices announcing its current activities.

As you are now discovering, an increasing amount of material in Spanish can be found on the Internet, including periodicals, information about universities in Spain and Latin America, etc. You will find clusters of computers located throughout the university for your use. We also have some useful links on our pages devoted to the subject of Hispanic Studies.

The Library is well-equipped and contains not only the books that you will require for your course work but also video-viewing facilities and project rooms that you can book in order to prepare for team project work.
