What can I do with Hispanic Studies beyond university?
Higher education not only provides you with a deep understanding of a particular discipline or disciplines, but also gives you a series of more general intellectual, personal and technical skills that will serve you well in employment, and should help you to define a role for yourself in society.
In keeping with the broad and interdisciplinary nature of the Hispanic Studies programme at Aberdeen, graduates go on to a wide range of careers after graduation. Some of our graduates embark upon careers that draw directly on their university studies, such as teaching and translation; others go into professions such as journalism and marketing that draw upon the more general academic and personal skills that the degree provides.
Key skills such as the ability to work in a team, communication skills and time-management are embedded into the courses throughout the programme. The Department aims not only to foster these sills but also to provide students with a critical understanding of the value and utility of such skills for life after graduation.
The Department has a Careers Liaison Officer, who co-ordinates a Careers Awareness Programme in conjunction with the University Careers Service, which includes:
In addition to the departmental Careers Awareness Programme, the Department has a Careers Noticeboard located on the second floor of the Taylor Building, Block A. The Department also has a representative on the School of Modern Languages Employers Liaison Group. This group meets approximately twice a year with local employers to discuss issues pertaining to graduate recruitment and skills. Students are also encouraged to make full use of the facilities at the Careers & Appointments Service, which include CV workshops, interview techniques, etc.
