Nerea Arruti came to Aberdeen as a lecturer in Hispanic Studies in 1999 having previously taught at Goldsmiths College London.
Nerea Arruti's research interests traverse a number of different fields. Her published research initially focused on the relationship between text and image in Argentine literature, and based on this interest she moved on to studying the interaction between memory, literature and visual culture in relation to violence in Spain and Latin America. She has edited a collection on the Guggenheim effect and on the role of art and politics in the Basque context (2003). She has published on the narrative of Julio Cortázar and Reinaldo Arenas' autobiography as art as therapy in the context of literature and Aids. She has also written on the topic of photographic representations of trauma in the Southern Cone and she has edited an interdisciplinary special issue on trauma, therapy and representation (2007). She has just completed the monograph Contemporary Basque Literature: Violence and Memory as Palimpsest.
Her current research project focuses on the relationship between art, literature and politics in the Basque context, a project that aims to challenge the concepts of identity and space from outside and within the Basque context: Basque Arts Project.
At the University of Aberdeen: MLitt in Latin American Studies, MLitt in Visual Culture, Centre for Modern Thought and Cultural Engagement initiative. External links include emerging collaborative network with colleagues in USA and Spain on the interaction between political conflict and the arts in the Basque context.
British Academy small award (2000), Carnegie Trust (2001 and 2008), University of Reno Nevada Visiting Scholar Travel Stipend (2001), University of Aberdeen Principal's Fund (2000, 2002 and 2004) and Cultural Engagement Grant (2008).
Her courses include at Honours Level "Film and Visual Culture in the Hispanic World" and "Representations of Violence in the Hispanic World". She has designed innovative courses such as "Basque Arts: The Conflict of Belonging". She contributes to the MLitt in Visual Culture and the MLitt in Latin American Studies.
