What are the content courses like at Levels 1 and 2? The academic study of Spanish at the University is not simply a question of acquiring language skills. Given that language does not evolve in a vacuum, but instead is culturally and socially determined, the Department sets a great deal of store by the content courses throughout the programme.
At Levels 1 and 2, we aim to provide students with a comprehensive introduction to the key issues and themes of the Hispanic world. Alternating between Spain and Latin America, courses at these levels focus on the history, and literary and visual cultures of the Hispanic world.
At this stage in the degree we also aim to introduce students to the analytical and critical skills that will be refined at Honours level. Content courses at Level 1 involve 2 contact hours per week, increasing to 3 hours per week at Level 2. Anyone intending to proceed on to Honours in Hispanic Studies should take the content courses in addition to the language component of the programme.
