About SOMC

SOMC

The University of Aberdeen Scottish Offshore Materials Centre is a new facility dedicated to the materials needs of the oil and gas industry. Established in 1999, it enhances the facilities of our Chemistry, Engineering and Geology Departments. We provide advice, testing, analysis and research support for any metals, polymers, cements, ceramics or rock encountered by the industry. Our new capabilities allow investigation of materials behaviour under high pressure and high temperature and our expertise ranges from corrosion and fatigue to polymer behaviour and formulation.

We look for co-operative research with industrial partners, as well as with colleagues in other academic institutions and disciplines.

Research Objectives

  • Test materials, full size components, sealing elements and rock samples at HP-HT conditions up to 250° C and 200 MPa (480° F at 29,000 psi)
  • Develop novel HP-HT materials
  • Identify and understand materials behaviour
  • Determine chemical and structural changes using advanced instrumentation.
