The MLitt in Museum Studies makes extensive use of the University’s internationally important collections and museums to explore museum history, collections, practices and social roles. The programme gives practical experience of working in a museum, working closely with professional and academic staff.

The MRes in Social Anthropology is a one year postgraduate course providing training in anthropological research. It draws on the wide range of expertise within the Department and also provides access to the library, archival and museum collections of the University of Aberdeen.

The degree in Energy Politics and Law will give an in-depth understanding of energy politics and law issues and an introduction to energy economics. Opportunities exist for working on dissertation projects in collaboration with companies and agencies in the energy industry.

This programme combines the strengths of the School of Social Science and the Business School to explore the intersection between money, politics and power and the relationship between international finance and policymaking at the transnational level.  This programme is designed to train specialists for careers in the international finance or in the government/non-government (NGO) sectors, where an understanding of global flows of money, trade and labour, and the global distribution of wealth they engender, is required.

What determines who gets what, why and how in the global economy? How do states, markets, classes and individuals shape the global distribution of wealth and poverty? Can capitalism in the 21^st century be re-regulated to promote global re-distributive, ecological and social justice? The MSc in International Relations and Management combines the study of how current international political and economic issues impact on how governments, businesses and other organisations operate globally.

A long-established programme that delivers a thorough understanding of three core themes. First, it explores the theory and application of power, force, and related instruments to achieve national and international security and defence objectives. Second, it examines the characteristics, strains, and complex nature of regional and global security challenges from Western and non-Western (especially China) perspectives. Third, the programme considers the impact of emerging technology on strategic affairs.

The MSc in Policy Impact builds on the extensive methodological expertise of the School of Social Science and its history of providing excellent methodological training via the Master’s in Research programmes. Further, the programme takes advantage of the University’s relationships with government and non-governmental organizations to provide students with the option of a hands on M&E experience with real world organizations engaged in policy formation and implementation. Graduates will therefore have unique academic and practical experiences which will help them compete successfully in the job market.

The degree is designed for students wishing to develop an advanced knowledge of the intellectual terrain of conflict resolution and post-conflict peacebuilding. It familiarises students with the central theoretical, conceptual, and empirical dimensions of well-developed approaches conflict resolution (or “peacemaking”) and the more recent mechanisms of post-conflict peacebuilding which have expanded and developed over the past twenty years. It also addresses and examines the intersections between these two areas of study, particularly discussing the interaction and overlap between peacemaking and peacebuilding theory and processes. As such, it subjects the processes of peacemaking and peacebuilding to critical reflection by considering the boundaries and interactions between the two, the limits to and challenges of administering mechanisms for peace, justice and development within conflict-affected societies, and the ongoing challenges for both of local ownership, evaluation, and sustainability. The degree works both as a stand-alone programme for students wishing to enhance their knowledge of this area to an advanced level in order to pursue a career in Peace and Conflict intervention practice, as well as providing the necessary bases for students wishing to pursue PhD and related studies in Peace and Conflict Studies, conflict resolution or peacebuilding in the social sciences.

This programme covers the core theoretical and methodological issues in sociology and offers a series of elective courses covering some of the main specialisms of our Department.  It’s particularly well suited for those wishing to extend their knowledge of sociology into the postgraduate level, or for those with little or no experience of sociology who want to equip themselves for advanced study in the future.
