The University of Aberdeen is pleased to announce the availability of awards for PhD study in the Department of Sociology, commencing September 2009. The award is for 15,000 pounds per annum, over a period of 3 years (36 months of full-time study). Applicants must hold relevant educational qualifications at undergraduate and masters level.

2. All those wishing to enter the competition for the award must submit two applications. The first is a general application to the University’s Admissions Office for PhD study. Details of how to do this can be found at: http://www.abdn.ac.uk/sras/postgraduate/apply.shtml
In your application to the University’s Admissions Office you will be asked to provide, “an outline summary of your proposed area of research in no more than 300 words.” However, to be considered for the Sociology PhD Awards Competition, you must also submit a more detailed research proposal to Tony Glendinning in the Department of Sociology. This more detailed research proposal for PhD study should be a maximum of 1,000 words in length, in standard word-processed format, and no more than four A4 pages (including references). A template is provided below. Please begin the proposal with your name and a short title for your PhD study.
3. The deadline for applications for the awards is Friday 26th June 2009. Applications are welcome by e-mail or by post, but applications must be received in full by 5pm on the day of the deadline.
4. Your entry into the award competition will be judged on the basis of the information provided in your application for postgraduate study, submitted to the University’s Admissions Office, along with your academic references, and your 1,000 word research proposal, submitted to the Department of Sociology. The criteria for judging entries to the competition are as follows:
