I was appointed to my present post in 1998. Before that, I completed an MA in German and Sociology at the University of Glasgow, where I then wrote my doctoral thesis on the Austrian architect, Adolf Loos. I also studied in Graz, Vienna and Tuebingen.
I am a member of the University of Aberdeen's Centre for Modern Thought, and sat on the curatorial board of Peacock Visual Arts, Aberdeen's Centre for Contemporary Art from 2005-2010.

My main research interests are in Visual Culture: in modern architecture; in the sociology and philosophy of space, architecture and communication, with a particular geographic focus on Berlin and Vienna; and in the sociology of art and globalization, with a focus on energy and the oil industry.
I have published two monographs: Fashioning Vienna (Routledge 2000) and Public Speaking in the City (Palgrave MacMillan 2009).
I am currently supervising doctoral work on: 'Rebuilding Berlin: Regeneration and Resistance'; 'The Ethics of the Photographic Medium: An Analysis of the Revisionist Criticism of Photographic Realism in Relation to the Ethical Role of the Artist'; 'Subverting the Failures of Documentary and Photojournalism and Creating New Dialogues through Collaborative Practice'; 'Teaching in the Gap between World and Plaything: From Cosmopolitan Solidarity to Exilic Education in Children's Museums'
I am also the Lead Supervisor on a new interdisciplinary Research Project, 'Translating Cultures', which draws together staff from German, French, Hispanic Studies, Film and Visual Culture, Music, Museum Studies and Sociology. The project carries with it a number of funded places for PhD students and for students who would like to complete a Masters Degree in Visual Culture or Comparative Literature.

My current research project looks at Cultural Responses to the Dilemmas of the Hydrocarbon Age. This project takes up the theme of urban modernity in a new context, relating it to questions about energy. As currently conceived, it has three interrelated strands, spanning the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. First, the project sets out to map sociological and cultural theoretical approaches to energy. Second, it investigates the place of the arts in 'energy cities', and the flow of cultural capital between these cities. Third, it traces artistic and cultural responses to energy security, energy transition, and energy conservation, showing how such responses shape our understanding of these matters. In this way, they play a role in constructing the ethical and legal framework that circumscribes the actions of individuals, governments and other institutions seeking answers to the 'dilemmas of the hydrocarbon age'.
As part of this project, I curated, together with Zeigam Azizov, an exhibition on OilScapes held at Peacock Visual Arts, Aberdeen.
Works by Zeigam Azizov, Peter Fend, Melik Ohanian, Aga Ousseinov and Owen Logan explore connections between oil, geopolitics and visual culture with particular emphasis on connections between the environment and mobility. Featuring an audio collage with voices from the University of Aberdeen's Lives in the Oil Industry oral history archive.
The show also includes a film series - OilScapes/Film - artists' talks and a workshop.
