Information and Advice
We recommend that as soon as you have seen your Adviser of Studies,
you check the date, time and venue of your course registration sessions.
At these sessions you will have the opportunity to meet staff who will be
teaching you and you will also be given a copy of the course guide. We hope
that you will also come along to our School Welcome Session at 1pm on Thursday
24th September in the Elphinstone Hall.
- School Office: This is the place to go if the information
about courses, timetables and rooms on the Portal isn't clear –
or if you can't get into your Portal! You'll be using the Office a lot,
for handing in work, among other things, so check it out as soon as you
can.
- Noticeboards: There is a noticeboard for New Students
situated opposite the entrance to Taylor Building A Block (the entrance
with the automatic doors, under the arches). This will provide important
information about courses. Each department also has its own noticeboard.
Celtic's is situated in Taylor C Block; English and Film and Visual Culture
are situated in Taylor B Block; German on the ground floor in Taylor A
Block; French on the first floor of Taylor A Block; and Hispanic Studies
on the 2nd floor of Taylor A Block. Be sure to check these regularly.
- Drop-in Centre: This is based in Taylor Building on
the first floor of A block, A35. It will be open from 2-4pm on the Friday
of Freshers Week and will be open from 2-4pm everyday during Week 1 of
term. It will be run by postgraduate students, most of whom were
undergraduates at Aberdeen themselves. They can talk to you about courses,
about studying in the School, and about the University and Aberdeen in
general. This is also a useful base for getting to meet other students
new to the School. There will be free tea and coffee on offer.
- Student Support: Starting university can be a daunting experience. Even if things do get off to a flying start you may find you run into problems later in the year. There are lots of people on campus who can help you at all stages of your degree. If you need some personal advice and support, or just someone to talk to, contact your adviser or one of the Student Support Services.
- For advice about specific courses: course coordinators/conveners are happy to answer queries. They, and all members of staff, have Office Hours, which will be posted on their office doors. This is when staff are available to advise you on any worries you may have about your work or your attendance, and to provide you with more feedback on assessments, if you need it. You don't need to make an appointment, as Office Hours are intended to be times when you can just drop in. Staff are always happy to see students at these times.
- Non Academic Queries: Pam Thomson, the School's Executive
Assistant, is in Taylor Building, B12. Although not an academic, Pam knows
a lot about things generally, and is happy to help you.
