About Us
The School of Language & Literature consists of the Departments of Celtic, English (Literature and Language), Film Studies, French, German and Hispanic Studies, as well as the Language Centre, which provides English language support to all international students studying at the University, and also offers both staff and students tailored courses and business services in a range of modern foreign languages. In addition the Language Centre functions as a resources library and provides important support for the Language departments.
Where Are We?
- The School Office is in A Block (A13). Its opening
hours are: Monday to Friday, 9.30-4.30.
- The Head of School, Professor Chris Fynsk, is based in Block B (B13), and the School Administrative Officer, Maureen Wilkie, has the room next to his (B11), if you need to make an appointment to see him.
- Most lecturers in the School have rooms in the Taylor Building, Blocks A, B & C, although some of us have rooms in the Old Brewery, opposite one of the entrances to C Block. You will find lists of staff, with room numbers, phone numbers and email addresses, on the Noticeboard outside Taylor A5 (near the Office). There are also photos here, to help you connect names to faces.
- The Language Centre is based in the Regent Building, on Regent Walk.
Who Are We?
- Teaching staff have different titles. There are Professors, Readers, Senior Lecturers, Lecturers, Teaching Fellows and Research Fellows. All except Research fellows are involved in teaching, and you'll almost certainly meet every kind in your first year.
- Each course is run by a Course Convener, or Course Coordinator (different names for same role), while lectures are usually given by different members of the Course Team. Tutorials are led by Course Tutors, who are either full-time members of staff, or fully qualified Teaching Assistants, usually working for a postgraduate degree.
- The names of all the people teaching you will be provided in the course documentation which you will be given. In some cases this can be downloaded from this website or bought in hard copy from the School office.
